We invite photographers, collectors, artists, and photography enthusiasts to bring a photography book that has inspired them. Together, we’ll explore how photography preserves memory, history, emotion, culture, and perspective in ways that no other medium can.

Guided by our Gallery Coordinator, Lucien Liu, the evening will feature an open, salon-style conversation where participants will share the books that have shaped their creative journeys while reflecting on one central question:
What does photography preserve that nothing else can? Participants are encouraged to share:
• A photography book that has inspired or influenced them.
• Their perspective on what photography preserves and why it matters.

Whether you’re an experienced photographer, an avid collector, or simply someone who appreciates the art of visual storytelling, this is an opportunity to connect with fellow members of the Leica community, discover new books and ideas, and celebrate the enduring impact of photography through the printed page.

On June 25, we were proud to host the opening reception for Lost in the Funhouse, an exhibition featuring the photography of Ken Graves . Eva Lipman .lipman.graves, Ken’s lifelong partner in both life and photography, gave a heartfelt talk reflecting on his artistic practice and enduring legacy.

Bringing together photographs shaped by wit, disorientation, and psychological tension, Lost in the Funhouse reflects on the instability of contemporary life and the strange theater of American culture. Borrowing its title from John Barth’s landmark 1968 story collection, the exhibition recalls a moment when artists and writers were grappling with a world that no longer felt coherent or innocent.

John Barth’s story follows a young boy, Ambrose, who has gone on an outing to an amusement park with his family. He is thirteen — no longer a child, not yet an adult – searching, confused, and anxious. He has gotten lost in the funhouse and he fears he may never find his way out.

“He wonders will he become a regular person? Something has gone wrong; his vaccination didn’t take; at the Boy Scout initiation campfire he only pretended to be deeply moved, as he pretends to this hour that it is not so bad after all at the funhouse…..how long will it last? He envisions a truly astonishing funhouse, incredibly complex yet utterly controlled from a great central switchboard like the console of a pipe organ. Nobody had enough imagination.…. he would be its operator:….. a switch would ease the fellow’s way…….And later…..He wishes he had never entered the funhouse. But he has. Therefore he will construct funhouses for others and be their secret operator – even though he’d rather be among the lovers for whom funhouses are designed.”

This fall, TBW Books will release Ken Graves Was A Genius, a new publication featuring this remarkable body of work, accompanied by a thoughtful essay by Emily Keegin . Please stay tuned for more details.

On Thursday, June 18, we were thrilled to host an artist conversation between artist Eric Ruby .ruby and Allie Haeusslein , Curator of Photography and Student Art at SFO Museum . The discussion explored Ruby’s new exhibition, Kamper Sweet Kamper, at SFO Museum and his latest publication with Nocturno , Stone Soup, a compelling visual meditation on drought, climate change, and the quiet tensions that shape contemporary life in the American West.

Ruby reflected on the years he spent living on a farm in Sonoma County from 2015 to 2018 in a small 1960s Forester travel trailer he affectionately called “the Kamper.” He also spoke about his photographic practice and his enduring interest in the relationship between landscapes and the people who inhabit them.

If you haven’t seen the exhibition yet, Eric Ruby: Kamper Sweet Kamper is on view through December 6 at SFO Museum, Terminal 3, Gallery 3A, located pre-security on the Departures level.

Graves’ photographs embrace the absurdity, humor, and contradictions embedded within everyday life. Moving through landscapes of spectacle, performance, and unease, his images reveal a world shaped by illusion, confusion, and emotional dislocation, where meaning feels fragmented and uncertain. Yet rather than retreat from chaos, Graves transforms it, shaping moments of tension, irony, and visual excess into compositions that are incisive, unsettling, and deeply human. Beneath the humor and disorder lies an artist acutely attuned to the strange choreography of American life, carefully containing instability and transforming it into something enduring.

Lost in the Funhouse celebrates Ken Graves not only as a remarkable photographer, but as an original American artist whose work continues to resonate with striking relevance today. These photographs invite viewers into a world where humor and uncertainty intertwine, and where the camera becomes both witness to and architect of the strange spectacle of modern life.
