In 2013, we photographed a red house with lavender trim directly across the street from Kite Hill. This year, we got to shoot it again, and it's completely unrecognizable (in the best way).

Rossington Architecture fully transformed the house by knocking down walls and adding windows, prioritizing open space and natural light. Now, the front door opens into a sleek, modern entryway that leads straight into the living room and kitchen. The staircase, once enclosed by walls, is now black steel and floats over the dining area. The bedrooms and bathrooms also got major upgrades.

Our photography has obviously improved as well, thanks to 13 years of upgrades to our gear, techniques, and editing.

Cancel your Saturday plans, old sport. "The Gatsby House" in Berkeley is having an open house.

Our photography, aerials, twilights, and floor plans help it make its best first impression online, but this is one place you need to see in person to fully appreciate.

Willis Polk designed the home in 1915 for his chief engineer, T. Ronnenberg, who later worked on both the Golden Gate and Bay bridges.

Inside, you'll find paneled walls, a sculptural staircase, and a sunroom lined with arched windows. The whole main level is dedicated to living and entertaining, and access from Tunnel Road makes it easy for guests to come and go. In Gatsby's day, a well-stocked cellar meant breaking the law; thankfully, the new owners will be able to openly enjoy the w**e cellar (no bootlegging required).

Things move fast in real estate, but for this record-breaking Noe Valley house, things moved at warp speed.

471 Hoffman Avenue came on the market asking $6.9M. Within minutes, a buyer called—and just seven hours later, the seller accepted their $9.1 million offer. The transaction marks Noe Valley’s highest-priced home sale of the past year.

Our team helped bring the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home to life with photography, video (complete with an agent interview), aerial stills, twilight photography, floor plans, a brochure, and, of course, a property website.

“Don’t ruin the Eichler.”

That was real estate agent Lamisse Droubi’s one rule for the renovation of 190 Amber Drive — a $900,000 transformation that carefully preserved the home’s architectural identity.

Designed by Claude Oakland for Joseph Eichler, the 1962 home retains its warm woodwork, floor-to-ceiling glass, and prioritization of the nature outside. A custom Henrybuilt kitchen brings the interiors up to date, while an expansive garden by Terremoto creates several places to gather, dine, and enjoy the southern views.

Eichlers are rare in San Francisco (the hills presented such a challenge that there is just one tract in the entire city). This one, with its larger-than-normal square footage and double-sized lot, is one-of-a-kind.

The way our team edited these photographs is as distinctive as the home itself. To match the home’s distinctive character, Lamisse asked our team for a cinematic, editorial treatment. Rich saturation and golden-hour warmth emphasize its woodwork, earthy palette, and lush garden. The result feels especially fitting for this midcentury modern gem in Diamond Heights.

Some houses change hands every few years, but this Kentfield home has had just one owner since it was built in 1966.

Sixty years in the same family means that Open Homes' marketing — in this case, photography, aerials, a walkthrough video tour, floor plans, and a dedicated website at 20Hanken.com — was most people's very first impression of the home. Looking at the sunroom under its twin skylights, the bright and modern kitchen, and the redwoods standing sentinel in the backyard, we think we did it justice.

🤘 Every great show deserves an encore.

Part Two of our Metallica house tour belongs to Kirk Hammett, the only current member of the band born in San Francisco.

We photographed three of his former SF homes:

308 Sea Cliff — a 1922 Neo-Classical home overlooking China Beach that sold for $12.8 million in 2018, with Pacific views from nearly every room.

320 Sea Cliff — his neighboring 1926 Spanish Colonial, where vintage horror posters from Hammett’s famous collection once covered the walls.

And finally, 2505 Divisadero — an 1899 Pacific Heights mansion with a recording studio, 2,000-bottle w**e cellar, full bar, and some surprisingly spooky history. Hammett has said he believed the house was haunted.

🤘 Metallica Homes Across the Bay: Part One

Before Metallica became a Bay Area institution, they were an L.A. band trying to recruit East Bay bassist Cliff Burton. Burton agreed to join on one condition: the band had to move north. So in 1983, Metallica relocated to El Cerrito.

Years later, we had the chance to photograph homes owned by some of the band’s members.

First up: Lars Ulrich’s Tiburon estate, an approximately 13,000-square-foot home with 25+ rooms, panoramic Bay views, a recording studio, underground sports court, and one unforgettable bathroom with a giant saltwater aquarium.

Then there’s James Hetfield’s former Novato retreat, hidden on more than five acres, with a sound studio and a saltwater pool surrounded by natural boulders and a cascading waterfall.
