Harvey Milk Photo Center San Francisco's Community Darkroom

The Harvey Milk Photography Center has the largest public darkroom in the United States and has been a cornerstone of arts programming in the community since the 1940s. We offer a wide variety of intimate weekly classes, Saturday workshops, and orientations in both film and digital photography for all skill levels. Additionally, we offer memberships that include full use of our darkroom, film processing areas, and state-of-the-art digital lab, along with the opportunity for members to showcase their work in four exhibits per year.

San Francisco’s wild western edge, up close and unfiltered.

24 photographers. Long lenses, heavy water housings, and a whole lot of whitewash. Surfers, wires, concrete, and the raw power of the Pacific, all in one room.

It usually lives in a drawer behind out front desk and hasn’t been seen in a few weeks. The work is on the walls — now meet the people who made it!

We’re hosting two casual drop-in conversations for exhibitors in this year’s Member, Staff & Volunteer Show to share a little about their work. No presentations, no pressure — just five minutes each, a room full of people who get it, and good conversation.

Join us on Wednesday, September 9 from 6–7:30pm or Saturday, September 19 from 2–3:30pm. Come to one or both.
