SF Carnaval | Part 6

Carnaval is my whole heart. ❤️

There is something so powerful about seeing our communities come together to celebrate culture, identity, ancestry, resilience, and joy. We carry our ancestors with us everywhere we go, in the way we dance, the way we dress, the music that moves through our bodies, the art we create, and the love we pour into one another. Joy is something no one can take away from us.

reminds me that celebration is resistance. Dance is memory. Music is healing. Art is documentation of who we are and where we come from.

I love this city deeply, and the Mission really does have my heart. I hope these portraits reflect back the beauty, power, style, spirit, and love within our community. Thank you for allowing me to witness and document these moments.

Que viva Carnaval ❤️✨

Her Home (is)land

Kerri Ann “Ifit” Na’puti Borja carries Chamoru, Micronesian, and Pacific Islander identity as responsibility and inheritance. Rooted in San Francisco’s Southeast neighborhoods, Visitation Valley, Sunnydale, Bayview–Hunters Point, and the Excelsior. She understands culture as something that must be actively held, protected, and passed forward. To be a womyn who carries culture, for Ifit, is to carry her peoples’ traditions, histories, and values with pride for future generations of Chamorus and Pacific Islanders. When she shows up fully in community, she carries her ancestors, her home(is)land, her language, and the stories of her people, alongside a deep Marianas Trench love that grounds her movement through the world. As a carver of Chamoru alåhas, traditional and contemporary body adornments made from shells and natural materials. Ifit transmits culture through craft, story, and language. Each piece she creates holds memory and meaning, offering culture not as artifact, but as living knowledge shaped by hand, ocean, and lineage.

I’m deeply honored to be co-creating this portrait project with the .museum , made possible through the Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation Randolph Newman Cultural Enrichment Endowment.

We are currently seeking 10 Native American women from across generations and tribal nations in the Santa Rosa area to take part in a portrait exhibition rooted in visibility, cultural memory, resilience, and pride. Each participant will be photographed in her traditional regalia, honoring the stories, traditions, and ancestral ties carried through generations.

Calling Native American women to represent their nations, their stories, and their strength.

Only 10 participants will be selected for this exhibition. If there is someone in your family or community whose presence deserves to be seen and celebrated, we invite you to nominate yourself or a loved one.

Submit nominations by July 10th.

Nekia moves through the world as a conduit of sound, ancestry, and restoration. Adorned with Shona and Ndebele jewelry from Zimbabwe and Southern Africa, her white feather headdress crowns her as both guide and guardian. In this portrait, her hands rest on her heart and lungs, breathing deeply, exhaling healing into the space around her. She carries music like breath, weaving rhythms and ancestral knowledge into medicine for body, mind, and spirit. Every gesture, every vibration, becomes an act of care, remembrance, and connection. Nekia’s practice as a healer, filmmaker, educator, and sound practitioner bridges continents and generations. Presence itself is her art, and through it, culture lives, ancestry is made tangible, and every breath becomes a gift of empowerment.

Faaaloalo.Alofa.Tautua.Aiga. kil_ carries Samoan culture through embodiment, service, and devotion to community. Grounded in the Pacific Islander Cultural District and the Samoan Community Development Center, she understands cultural stewardship through core Samoan values: faaaloalo (respect), alofa (love), tautua (service), and aiga (family). These values are inherited, not simply taught, and living them is both an honor and a responsibility. In this portrait, Vonnie wears an all-white puletasi, a traditional Samoan garment worn for cultural and spiritual gatherings, alongside an ula lopa crafted from pandanus seeds and a selu tuiga placed in her hair, each element affirming pride, identity, and ancestral connection. When she shows up fully, she carries her family, her heritage, and the resilience and sacrifices of those who came before her, never standing alone but always representing her people. As Program Coordinator for the 3Ts Program (Tupulaga Talavou Tula’i), Vonnie uplifts Pacific Islander youth through cultural education, dance, and community care. Her strength emerges through the confidence she witnesses in young people as they embrace who they are. To be honored in this way affirms that her presence matters, that Samoan culture is living, worthy, and carried forward through love, dignity, and action.

Family is both inherited and chosen | a living archive of culture, memory, and survival. For primas Simone Jacques and Nicole Ioane, kinship is where q***rness is held, where cousins become lifelines, and where love expands across blood and bond.

Simone, an Afrolatina Haitiana-Mexicana woman rooted in La Misión, moves guided by ancestry, community, and resistance. She carries her ancestors, her egguns, and the strength of Black and brown immigrant women who teach her to trust her struggle. Through Black feminist praxis and Black lesbianism como herramienta, she steps into stewardship, of women’s autonomy and collective healing.

Alongside her, Nicole carries Nicaraguan and Samoan culture through lineage, family, and the Mission. As a q***r woman, this is both honor and responsibility, shaped by her mother and Nana. In this portrait, she wears an ofu made from elei, Samoan barkcloth from her family’s village, paired with jeans and Tims, moving between femininity and masculinity, tradition and city life.

Together, they affirm family as foundation and future—a place where culture is honored, shared, and always becoming.
