The latest Rapt collaboration is the work “Joy ~ Sorrow ~ Hope” co-directed by Lindsay Gauthier and Satya Gontcho A Gontcho, with an original score by Aryahi Naomi Onaga. The film has been on a successful worldwide festival run, winning “Best Visual Design” at the Experimental Dance & Music Film Festival and taking home awards for “Best Music Video” and “Best Composer” at the Montreal Women Film Festival.
Choreographed and performed through the refined vocabulary of Odissi, “Joy ~ Sorrow ~ Hope” draws on the verses of 13th-century Sufi poet Shams of Tabriz and places ancient spiritual poetry in direct dialogue with contemporary emotional experience. The cycle of sorrow and joy is rendered not as narrative, but as embodied knowledge — moving through the body as Shams’ words move through one’s inner world. At its heart, the film is a meditation on hope as a transcendental force — not contingent on circumstance, but woven into the fabric of existence itself.
Experience the film in theaters on Sunday, November 8th at 7:30PM when it screens at the San Francisco Dance Film Festival at the Brava Theater.
