Third and Howard Streets in downtown San Francisco (1985)

This 1985 view of Third Street and Howard Street captures the changing South of Market district during the final decades of the twentieth century. The area was still characterized by warehouses, older commercial buildings, industrial businesses, and busy streets. At the same time, redevelopment was beginning to transform South of Market into a more modern business and residential district. Traffic moved steadily through the intersection as San Francisco's downtown continued expanding southward. The surrounding streets reflected a mixture of historic industrial architecture and newer development. In later decades, this part of the city would become closely associated with technology, major events, and large-scale redevelopment. This photograph preserves the appearance of SoMa during an important transitional period.
