Today is Photosprouts’ team day-off. I slept in and went to grab a sandwich at Devil's Teeth Baking Company that Jordi jordimolina.photography recommended (gosh, I never know there’s a great bakery near my neighborhood!), and ate it on the beach.
After looking at the ocean for 30 minutes I suddenly remembered the San Francisco Zoo emailed me to pick up my award-winning photo: they printed and mounted it on a foam board. Thankfully I took the print, and holding the print in my hands felt so much more weight and meaning than seeing it on my phone.

Funny how life brings the right people together.

Dr. Uma first joined one of my Advanced Smartphone Photography Workshops as an attendee. As we talked throughout the day, I was amazed by the depth of her knowledge—not only is she an avid photographer and videographer, but she’s also an expert in neuroscience.

I remember leaving that workshop with one clear thought: I have a feeling we’re going to work together someday.

Sometimes you just meet people whose passion and vision naturally complement your own. Looking back now, I’m so grateful I trusted that feeling.

Now we are co-teaching the Mindful Smartphone Videography Class!

We have realized that taking videos calms one’s mind in a way few things can.

When we film, our attention naturally shifts away from the noise in the head and toward what’s happening around us. We begin to notice the gentle sounds, the changing light, the colors, the movement, and the little moments that would otherwise pass unnoticed.

It’s almost like the world starts playing in slow motion inside the brain.

The more present we become, the more beautiful ordinary life feels. And perhaps that’s what mindful videography is really about—not just creating beautiful videos, but learning to truly experience the moments we’re living.

We don’t think merely teaching the technical aspects in the Smartphone Videography Class is enough.

One needs to be mindful, quietly observing the movement, light and shadow and emotions of people, and be aware of your own thoughts through videography. And we think these are the core elements to make your videos compelling and memorable, in addition to the technical aspects that we teach in this class.

Alongside the technical skills—camera movements, composition, framing, camera angles, frame rates, directing, and editing—we also want to nurture something deeper. Drawing on neuroscience and mindfulness, this class is designed to help you become more present, more creative, and more confident in navigating everyday life—not just in making beautiful videos. Because those compelling videos are the result of your internal state.

This class is taught by neuroscientist Dr Uma V and Christina. Sign up at www.Photosprouts.com. Limited to 5 attendees per class, we keep the class size small so there will be a lot of personal, guided exercises.

Richard’s photographs have soul.

Over the past few months, I’ve had many conversations with fellow photographers about the purpose of street photography. We spend so much time learning to see beautiful light, compose carefully, and capture aesthetically pleasing moments. But eventually I found myself asking a deeper question:

What story are we actually trying to tell?

If a photograph is technically excellent but says nothing about the human experience, is that enough?

I think I found my answer through my conversations with Richard.

To Richard, street photography is not simply about making beautiful images. It’s about slowing down, observing with intention, and connecting with the people and moments that make everyday life meaningful. The camera becomes more than a tool for creating attractive compositions—it becomes a way of paying attention to the world with curiosity, empathy, and presence.

Street photography has a philosophical side. It invites us to reflect on how we see others, how we experience the world, and ultimately, who we become through the act of seeing.

Sign up his Leica Street Philosophy | Street Photography with Intention Workshop at www.photosprouts.com. The class includes a guided street photoshoot and a critique session.

That’s what makes Richard’s photographs feel different. They don’t just capture a moment—they carry a soul.
