In exploring the intricate dynamics of our current era, I've been reflecting more on the core characteristics that bind humanity together, transcending artificial boundaries. Recently, I shared an article recounting my experience with the spiritual healers in Eswatini and South Africa. This journey not only celebrated cultural diversity but also prompted a deeper exploration of the shared attributes that makes us human.
While it's widely understood that human beings exhibit sophisticated executive function compared to other animals, the fusion of this cognitive capacity with emotional and social domains may underpin the very evolutionary origins of our collective spirituality, creativity and perhaps storytelling itself. This post contains photographs I made while in Africa, but also additional consideration of these ideas.
As a humanitarian photographer, both our shared human traits and unique cultural expressions profoundly shape my work. Through my images, I seek to capture the interconnectedness of the human experience alongside the distinct creativity and traditions that define individual communities. By celebrating both our commonalities and our differences, I hope that my photography provides medium to foster empathy, understanding, and connection across cultures.
