Lys Bleu Designs

Lys Bleu Designs San Diego based landscape and fine art photographer. I have been interested in art since I was a little girl, and have been drawing as long as I can remember.

My parents encouraged me in my love of art, and enrolled me in art classes from a young age, up until I went to high school, when I took art classes through school. I took as many art classes as I was able in high school, including 2 years of IB Art, which is similar to the AP program. I did not pursue art as a degree, but continued to make my own art, and I took one college painting class as an e

lective. I focused mostly on painting as my preferred art form, and have done watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting. I have been taking photos for almost as long as I’ve been drawing, but not quite. I received my first camera sometime in elementary school, and have been taking photos of everything around me since then. That first camera that I had was a film camera, but it was a cheap one. I started making scrapbooks of everything that I did, so I took many, many photos. When I was in middle school, digital cameras were becoming mainstream, and I got a cheap one. I have gotten progressively better and better cameras, which also makes sense since technology gets better and better, but I also got better quality cameras to correspond with my skill and passion increasing. I got my first DSLR camera about 6 years ago; a Nikon D60. It was a gift, and I didn’t quite know how to use it. I started to read the manual, but then took an online photography class to help my understanding. With my art background and long history of taking photos, I knew the aesthetic aspects of photography, but not the technical aspects, so the photography class helped me to understand the basics of how to use my camera in any setting. I have upgraded my camera now, of course, but I have also experimented with photography using my phone, and have purchased film cameras to go back to experimenting with that. I am constantly taking photos and learning from my own experiences, as well as interacting with other photographers to learn new techniques. I don’t think it is possible to know everything there is to know about photography; there is always something new to learn, and I am actively participating in that.

Hey everyone! I've got some updates for you on my zine! First, I did an interview on Frozenwaste.land about my process, inspiration, and the zine, which can be found here:

ALSO, since the Kickstarter ended (and was successful!) I made a mini shop just so you can purchase the zine now if you missed out! That can be found here:

One of the other things I actually miss in Portland: these florists at the Portland State farmer's market. They make the most beautiful flower arrangements, better than anybody else at any farmer's market I've ever been to. These are like wedding bouquet level of gorgeousness. But for like $20! I don't know what they're called though, sorry. You'll find them if you go to the farmer's market though.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Besides the fabulous architecture, the St. John's Bridge is my favorite color. Please, show me a better bridge. Fun fact: we actually never went to North Portland and I actually never saw this bridge for most of my life. When I started selling my photos at markets, a guy asked me if I had ever taken any photos of it, said I should check it out, and so eventually I did. Thank you, random stranger, for this love affair.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Underneath the St. John's Bridge is just as fabulous as above. I would also like to point out that I didn't not really get back into shooting film until after I moved from Portland to San Diego, so although this is my favorite bridge and I have a lot of digital photos of it, I had no film photos of it. However, everyone in San Diego thinks Portland is super cool for some reason, so everyone goes there and everyone takes awesome film photos of MY bridge. So out of the basically zero free time we had there last year trying to see everyone at Christmas, I forced my family to come out to the bridge with me so I could take some photos. Except now I'm mad that they're not the most amazing film photos of the bridge. I suppose at some point I'll have to go back.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So these are super old...they're from Christmas a year ago. This is the first roll of the new Ektachrome that I shot. I didn't actually like how they came out, which is why I never posted them. They're sharp and the colors are accurate, but it was cloudy in Portland (and San Francisco), so the photos to me are all a bit dull. I only bought two rolls of Ektachrome and I shot the entire second roll on fireworks on the 4th of July (which I've posted some already) since I didn't like this roll and didn't want to waste shot on boring film, ha. (The fireworks actually turned out amazing, FYI). This is my favorite bridge in Portland though, and the photos are not TERRIBLE, so I figured I should actually post them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
