Amboseli National Park in Kenya is one of my favorite places in Africa to photograph elephants. Its name comes from the Maasai word Empusel, meaning "salty, dusty place." During the dry season, elephants make an incredible trek across the dusty plains to reach the swamps for food and water, often walking more than 10 miles each day.
For the best perspective, I laid flat on the scorching ground and waited for the herd to cross. The low angle made these incredible giants feel even more powerful. It was hot, dusty, and uncomfortable, but worth every second.
