When my grandma, Louise George, decided to move into a senior living community about ten years ago, she held a big garage sale to downsize. She was moving into a much smaller space, and although she was ready, it was hard for all of us to see her part with so many things she’d held onto over the years. My grandma was the absolute sweetest person in the world. She was gentle, kind, endlessly loving, and just the kind of woman who made everything feel like home.
While digging through a pile of clothes at that sale, I spotted this dress. It stood out right away. It was clearly handmade, and something about it felt special. I asked Grandma about it, and she smiled and said, “Oh, I made that for myself a long time ago. In my 40’s. I always loved it, so I kept it.”
Her tendency to hold onto things (what some might call being a little bit of a pack rat) ended up being a gift to me. The dress fit me perfectly, and I wore it that year on Easter Sunday, thinking of her the entire day.
Now, all these years later, my daughter Annabelle (her great-granddaughter) was trying to decide what to wear for her senior portraits. We went through outfit after outfit, and nothing felt quite right. On a whim, I mentioned the dress. I didn’t think she’d go for it, but to my surprise, she loved the idea. When she tried it on, the dress looked stunning on her. The floral pattern, the classic silhouette, it was perfect for the flower field we had picked for the shoot.
Seeing Annabelle standing there in that 60-year-old dress in this beautiful field felt like a full-circle moment. A dress sewn by her great grandma, worn by me decades later, and now worn by Annabelle as she closes a chapter of her own and gets ready to begin a new one.
I know with all my heart that if Grandma Louise could see her great-granddaughter in this dress, she would have absolutely beamed with joy.
