Crown Jewel Revealed 👑💚❤️

After only a glimpse before, the full splendor of the Resplendent Quetzel finally comes into view. Perched on a moss covered vine high in the Costa Rica cloud forest, it wears its emerald and crimson plumage like a living gemstone, a reminder that some of nature's greatest treasures reveal themselves only to the patient observer. Moments of capturing magnificent creatures like this are why I return to nature with camera in hand.

Capturing this Keel-billed Toucan with its feathery tongue sticking out was a complete fluke as I was not even out and about trying to photograph birds yet.

I was lying in my hotel bed drinking my coffee scrolling my social feed when all of a sudden I heard a sound I hadn't heard before. I quickly jumped up and grabbed my camera while in my pajamas and bolted to our deck. Hungrily scanning the area and waiting to hear the sound again, I spotted this fellow. He had his back to us and was looking the other way so, I had to patiently wait for him to turn his head. At first, he turned it in the other direction and was somewhat blocked by branches. After a long wait and a bit of luck, he finally turned his head to our right and I was able to capture him with his tongue out.

They don't call it, "Golden Flash of the Canopy" for nothing.

While these tiny, brilliant birds are relatively common in both the dry forests of Guanacaste and the lush foothills of Monteverde, catching them mid-air takes an incredible amount of luck and timing.

Spotting them usually starts with hearing their high-pitched whistles up in the mistletoe, followed by a sudden burst of yellow darting through the trees.

Birding Tip: If you're looking for them, keep your eyes on the forest edges and fruiting trees!

Snout Scout of the Emerald Forest 🌿

A lone Coatimundi pauses along a thick, twisted vine high in the rainforest canopy. These nimble members of the raccoon family are constant explorers, always hunting for their next meal below the treetops.

Captured during a wildlife trek, this moment stood out for the incredible texture of the vine and the intense focus in the coati's eyes.
