Keen Eyes

The eyes of Burrowing Owls are keen allowing them to quickly adjust between bright and dim light, have 3D depth perception, exceptionally farsighted allowing them to spot prey from a long distance, and are fixed, so they have to rotate their head to see in different directions.

This one was posing nicely for me.

Hello Facebook Fans,

I hope all of you in the U.S. enjoyed your extra day off, as we remember and honor the service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

I’m proud to share that over the weekend, two of my images were purchased and will soon be hanging in the home of a veteran. He selected two acrylic prints: We Are So Small II and A Slice of Golden Fall Aspen — a true honor for me as an artist.

Water Ballet

A Green Heron gracefully dances on the calm lake waters leaving ripples in its wake as water cascades off of its delicate feet as it begins to take flight. It is mesmerizing to witness.

While the heron is frozen thanks to a fast shutter speed to capture its feet and beautiful plumage, action is portrayed by the ripples in the water leading up to its feet and the water cascading off of them along with some splashes.

La la la la la

While this Burrowing Owl looks as though it was sweetly singing, it was actually trying really hard not to fall asleep. When Burrowing Owls are outside of their burrow, they are usually looking for prey or standing guard.

Note the background blur and bokeh surrounding him was done intentionally as a soft artistic look. There were some plants around as I crouched down to take its photograph between some rocks.

On 1/30/24 it received a Daily Special and shout out on the A Woman’s Touch group on Fine Art America.

The Eyes Have It

The bright yellow color of the Burrowing Owls eyes help them to stand out and be noticed. While a Burrowing Owl cannot move its eyes around in their sockets like human eyes, they can turn their heads 270 degrees.

Piercing Gaze

Birdwatching and wildlife photography involve seeking out subjects, then patiently waiting for something to happen, like preening, head tilting, yawning, or an intense gaze. If you're lucky, you might capture it doing something more active, like flying or capturing prey.
