This elegant new setting combines rich reds, warm golds, crystal chandeliers, florals, and a beautiful grand piano for a timeless, sophisticated look. These previews focus mostly on standing portraits, but the finished set will also include a beautiful love seat, giving us even more options for couples, families, siblings, and individual portraits.

I absolutely love how this setting photographs, especially with formal dresses and rich jewel tones. It will be perfect for creating beautiful portraits that feel festive and luxurious without being limited to traditional Christmas photos.

What do we really hope our children carry with them when their school years are over? 📚✨

Education should not be primarily about the information that they learned or the grades they earned.

We hope they learned to seek truth. To recognize goodness. To love beauty. To remain curious. To ask meaningful questions. To choose courage and practice virtue.

And, perhaps most importantly, to never lose their sense of wonder.

I created this back-to-school portrait film around two siblings beginning another year at Great Hearts, but as I worked through their images, it became about something much bigger than the first day of school.

It became a celebration of classical education and the formation of a life.

Great books that introduce children to people and ideas across centuries.
Poetry meant to be remembered.
History meant to be understood.
Mathematics that reveals order.
Friendships that challenge and sharpen.
Teachers who ask students not simply what they think, but why.
And an education concerned not only with what a child knows, but with who that child is becoming.

That became the inspiration for the original song I created for this film, “The Things Worth Knowing.”

One line particularly resonates with me at this stage of my own motherhood:

“One day these backpacks will be gone.
One day these school years will move on.”

They will.

And far sooner than we imagine. ❤️

That's one reason I love photographing these ordinary milestones. A new school year may not feel as significant as a birthday or graduation while we're living it. But someday, the backpack, the uniform, the missing teeth, the books they loved, and the sibling standing beside them will belong to another time.

Photograph the chapters you think you'll remember.

Those are often the ones you'll be most grateful you preserved.

Backpacks packed. Books waiting. Another school year begins. 📚🍎

There is something so special about the beginning of a new school year.

Children walk through the doors a little taller than they were last year. They meet new teachers, discover new books, deepen friendships, tackle harder questions, and slowly become more fully themselves.

And these two get to walk a little of that journey together. ❤️

For this back-to-school session, I wanted to create something that felt different from a traditional school picture.

The desk. The globe. The books. The apple. The backpacks. Even the little teddy bear.

They're details from this particular chapter of childhood.

But what I especially wanted these portraits to capture was them: their relationship, their personalities, the way they laugh together, and what it looks like to be brother and sister at exactly this moment in their lives.

Because next year's portraits will already be different.

That is the beautiful and heartbreaking thing about photographing children. You don't realize how much they've changed until you look back.

I also love that their classical education gives these images an even deeper story. Their school years are about more than accumulating knowledge. They're learning to pursue truth, goodness and beauty; to read great books; to ask difficult questions; to cultivate virtue; and to approach the world with curiosity and wonder.

Those are things worth celebrating.

And these are years worth preserving.

Three birthdays. Three beautiful chapters. One little girl growing right before our eyes. 💕

There is something incredibly special about photographing the same child year after year.

At one, everything is tiny and new.
At two, personality begins to bloom.
And by three, that little baby suddenly feels like a little girl.

Looking through her portraits over the years is such a reminder of how quickly childhood changes. The dresses get bigger. The expressions become more confident. The tiny details change almost without us noticing.

And that is exactly why milestone portraits matter.

They are not simply pictures for today. They become part of a family's story.

Years from now, these photographs will bring back things that are so easy to forget: the sweetness of her smile, the way she held her flowers, the excitement of dressing like a princess, and exactly what it felt like to have a three-year-old in the family.

I love creating birthday sessions that feel like more than a backdrop and a cake. I want each session to feel beautiful, intentional, personal, and worthy of becoming an heirloom.

Because someday the gowns won't fit.
The crowns will be packed away.
The little hands won't be so little.

One little candle. Then two. And somehow… three. 🎂💕

This is why I believe so deeply in preserving childhood.

For three birthdays, I have had the privilege of watching this beautiful little girl grow in front of my camera. From the tiny baby smiles and cake at one… to the flowers and bows of two… to the princess gowns, sparkling crown, and joyful personality of three.

And when I placed those years together, I realized just how quickly it happens.

The baby disappears a little at a time.
The tiny hands grow.
The expressions change.
The dresses get bigger.
And suddenly, the little girl standing in front of you is not quite the baby you remember.

That feeling became the inspiration for this video and its original song, “Just Like a Dream.”

There is a line in the song that says:

“Someday these dresses won't fit anymore…”

And they won't.

That's exactly why these photographs matter.

Birthday portraits aren't simply photographs of what your child looks like at one, two, three, five, or ten. They preserve who your child was in that fleeting little season: the smile, the wonder, the personality, the tiny details you think you'll remember forever.

Someday, these photographs will belong to her.

And someday much farther from now, they may be among the photographs her own children treasure most. ❤️

✨ Ten looks beautiful on you. ✨

There is something so special about ten.

It's that beautiful season where childhood still sparkles with wonder, yet you can already catch glimpses of the incredible young lady God is shaping. Every smile is genuine. Every laugh is contagious. Every twirl reminds us how quickly these moments become treasured memories.

We spent the evening wandering through The Pearl in San Antonio, chasing golden light, dancing by the fountain, exploring hidden corners, and celebrating a milestone that deserved to be remembered forever.

The original song in this video was written just for her, and one of my favorite lines says:

"Keep your wonder, keep your laughter. Keep believing anything is true. The world is brighter than it knew... because ten looks beautiful on you."

That perfectly captures what I hope every child carries with them as they grow.

Thank you for allowing me to preserve another chapter of your family's story. These are the moments that become tomorrow's heirlooms.
