This morning in the freezing weather, a migrant who traveled to San Antonio from Venezuela knocked on my door and asked me if i had any work for him. I called my friend Mariana , who is also from Venezuela, to help me translate.
He told us he has been traveling by train with a goal of getting to Chicago to unite with his family, but doesn’t want to go to the authorities because he’s afraid he will be detained.
We felt he was being honest with us and we gave him $40 to help him find a safe place to stay for tonight.
This made me think how lucky we are to have what we have. I’m grateful for my family, for my job, and for this thing we call life.
There are millions of people who are suffering much more than we can ever imagine. I hope this man finds his way to see his family again.
I also realized that if this man has the freaking strength and courage to travel all this way for a better life, in brutal conditions, to knock on a stranger’s door to ask for work, then we can also find the strength and put in the work to make our own dreams come true.
