Game Over, New Game Plus
Ethan woke to a blaring 8-bit fanfare, the kind that signaled a new quest in his favorite RPGs. His room was the same—messy desk, glowing PC tower, empty energy drink cans—but something was off. A translucent blue HUD floated in his vision, displaying “HP: 100/100,” “Stamina: 80/80,” and a blinking objective marker: Get to Work - 0/1.
“What the—?” he muttered, rubbing his eyes. The HUD didn’t vanish. Instead, a pop-up appeared: Tutorial: Move with WASD or joystick equivalent. Interact with E.
Ethan laughed nervously. “Okay, weird dream.” He tried to stand, but his body lurched forward like he’d pressed W too hard, slamming into his desk. “Ow!” His HP dropped to 95. A red damage indicator flashed: -5 (Collision).
Panic set in. This wasn’t a dream. He was living in a video game.
He tested the rules. Walking felt like navigating a third-person character—smooth but slightly delayed. Opening his fridge required pressing E, and his breakfast options were limited to “Protein Bar (+10 HP)” or “Energy Drink (+20 Stamina).” He chose the bar, and his HP ticked back to 100. Chewing, he noticed a timer in the corner: Time to Work: 00:29:59. The objective marker pulsed over his apartment door.
Outside, the world was his city, but gamified. NPCs—er, people—had nameplates above their heads: “Barista Jen,” “Dog-Walker Mike.” Dialogue options popped up when he approached. Jen offered a side quest: Fetch Coffee Beans (Reward: 50 XP, +10 Reputation). Ethan declined, watching his Reputation meter dip slightly. “Harsh,” he muttered.
The commute was a gauntlet. Crossing the street triggered a quick-time event—press Space to dodge a cyclist. He nailed it, earning +5 Agility XP. But a spilled coffee from a clumsy NPC hit him for -10 HP and a Soaked debuff, lowering his Charisma stat. By the time he reached his office, his Stamina was down to 30, and a new status effect blinked: Exhausted (-10% to all actions).
Work was worse. His boss, labeled “Manager Karen (Hostile),” assigned him a task: Complete Spreadsheet (0/100 rows). Each row filled increased his Progress bar but drained Stamina. Ethan tried to game the system, spamming E to speed through, but a pop-up scolded him: Error: Repetitive Action Detected. Risk of Ban. He groaned, imagining a cosmic GM watching.
Lunch offered a brief respawn. A food truck vendor had a mini-game: match ingredients in a rhythm-based cooking challenge. Ethan aced it, earning a Buff Burger (+50 HP, +20 Stamina). His HUD now showed Level 1: 150/200 XP. “I’m leveling up my 9-to-5,” he said, half-amused, half-horrified.
The day wasn’t all bad. A coworker, “Techie Sam,” offered a co-op quest: Fix Printer Jam. Completing it netted Ethan 100 XP and a level-up. A triumphant chime rang as his HUD updated: Level 2! +1 Strength, +1 Intelligence. Choose a Perk. He picked Quick Learner for faster XP gains, hoping to hack this bizarre reality.
But the rules were unforgiving. Missing a bus cost him a Late debuff, and forgetting to save progress on a work task reset his spreadsheet to zero. By evening, Ethan was ragged, his HP at 40, Stamina at 10. Collapsing onto his couch, he faced a final prompt: Rest to Save and Quit? Y/N.
He hit Y, and the world faded to a loading screen. As darkness took over, Ethan grinned faintly. Tomorrow, he’d grind harder. If life was a game now, he’d min-max the hell out of it.
