It’s about 2am here, maybe later now. Just got off the phone with a dear friend of mine. He has a mare with colic in the veterinary hospital, so prayers and best of wishes for Molly. These phone calls are all too familiar. They are the calls of grim circumstances that only then allow us to demonstrate true, undeserved kindness, unconditional love.

I single out the horse community, because we are unique in a way. As told me once, we in the horse community have to help each other. Last year, when I went through something similar, every word of kindness was an analgesic to help survive the pain. A lot of you were there, even though you were far.

In spite of me signaling out the horse community, this extends to all of humanity. We have “gifts in men” to help us. Men and women, elders and youth that stay awake with you, to laugh and to cry even if they’re on the other side of the world. The mere existence of these people are gifts. We’ve all been there, late night, stranded on the side of the road, waiting in a hospital, over late night coffee or maybe whiskey etc.

I have a saying, a saying I do believe many of you have already shown me. “I will move earth, skies and seas for you… but in the end, I’m just a boy.” So the offer goes out, whether you’re in Texas or Tennessee, in the Pacific or in Portugal, New Mexico or Old Mexico etc etc etc!… If you can wait that long for a cup of sugar, then it’s my pleasure.

@ (to everyone else that I can and can’t think of, on and off instagram).

Jumiles (Euschistus taxcoensis).
These are a type of stink bug native and probably unique to the state or region of Guerrero, Mexico where my father and his family are from. These insects are actually eaten by some, and the ones shown in the picture have already been toasted. Since pre-Hispanic times they have often been used in salsa, made into tacos, etc. but I clearly remember them crawling around my grandmother while she snacked on them! Today, I did not taste any… maybe some other day.

I may be rather infatuated with Iberia, and a lot of Europe, I’ve grown into being very Texan at times, but I don’t forget my native blood. “¡Soy más indio que tú aunque no parezca!”

Yuli van de Vargas. My Friesian fantasy.

I’m excited to experiment with some more smoke bombs later today. I shall have only brave, smoke bomb proof horses!

Yuli is my pride and joy. We won a 2nd premium when she was only 4 months old. We literally rode out a thunderstorm during a Star Wars photoshoot, capes waiving and all! I was invited to a trail ride, and after 6 months of being out in pasture, not only did she behave her best, we then ended up working cows that very day! Lights and smoke bombs? Piece of cake 😎

Photo cred and special thanks to for always pushing our limits and then casually producing art that’s out of this world!

“Dans la nature rien ne se crée, rien ne se perd, tout change.”

(In nature nothing is created, nothing is lost, everything changes.)

— Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier, the chemist to discover the laws of conservation of mass, matter and energy.

Things have indeed changed, and now you have a palette full of new scenes, colors, flora and fauna in the deserts of Arizona I didn’t even dream existed! Photographers like you are record keepers, but artists as well. You create a paradise wherever you go, and help us remember fondly thereafter.
