It’s about 2am here, maybe later now. Just got off the phone with a dear friend of mine. He has a mare with colic in the veterinary hospital, so prayers and best of wishes for Molly. These phone calls are all too familiar. They are the calls of grim circumstances that only then allow us to demonstrate true, undeserved kindness, unconditional love.
I single out the horse community, because we are unique in a way. As told me once, we in the horse community have to help each other. Last year, when I went through something similar, every word of kindness was an analgesic to help survive the pain. A lot of you were there, even though you were far.
In spite of me signaling out the horse community, this extends to all of humanity. We have “gifts in men” to help us. Men and women, elders and youth that stay awake with you, to laugh and to cry even if they’re on the other side of the world. The mere existence of these people are gifts. We’ve all been there, late night, stranded on the side of the road, waiting in a hospital, over late night coffee or maybe whiskey etc.
I have a saying, a saying I do believe many of you have already shown me. “I will move earth, skies and seas for you… but in the end, I’m just a boy.” So the offer goes out, whether you’re in Texas or Tennessee, in the Pacific or in Portugal, New Mexico or Old Mexico etc etc etc!… If you can wait that long for a cup of sugar, then it’s my pleasure.
