"The way to understanding is to honestly seek it"
When we hear "I just don't understand why..." it can either represent a roadblock of closed-mindedness or, to the most intelligent among us, a sign to expand our perspective.
-
Too often, people use it in a way that conveys an unwillingness to genuinely understand a differing viewpoint or unfamiliar concept – signaling their lack of an open mind. This dismissive attitude is not beneficial to improvement as it shuts down the path to greater understanding.
-
In contrast, the quote "The way to understanding is to honestly seek it" encourages an open, truth-seeking mindset. It highlights the distinction between clinging rigidly to one's initial point of view versus taking that feeling as a humble start for inquiry and learning.
The most successful critical thinkers remain humbly open to seeking understanding, even if the situation seems crazy at first, and they listen and seek additional information, freely allowing for changing perspectives when faced with compelling evidence. Even if it means updating long-held beliefs, because they value and want what's right, not just what's best to support their opinion. Too many people block any potential growth when they stubbornly ignore or reject anything that doesn't immediately make sense.
-
So, "Seek what's right, not what's best to support your opinion."
-
This quote calls us to prioritize following the truth wherever it leads over the temptation to cling to existing viewpoints simply because they align with what we currently believe.
-
It contrasts the virtuous path of "seeking what's right" through an open-minded examination of evidence and reasoning with the flawed tendency to more selectively "seek what's best to support your opinion."
-
Maintain sincere curiosity. Don't use "I don't get it" as a dead-end, but as the first step of an ‘understanding’ journey. Honestly and diligently seek insights through questioning, listening, researching, and reasoning.
-
Intellectual humility - being willing to change your mind in pursuit of deeper truth over stubbornly defending your current opinions.
