Jehnna & Jason 💕

Venturing into portrait photography makes me nervous but I couldn’t of been happier to do this one for my brother-in-law! I wasn’t very confident I’d get anything good enough but I’m so happy with how these came out and how cute these two look together ❤️

The red kangaroo is the largest species of the kangaroo-clan! Males can stand more than 6 ft tall while females average out at 4-5ft tall. These marsupials originate in central mainland Australia and prefer open plains containing grasslands and deserts with some scattered trees and shrubs. Being grazers in the wild they eat an array of grasses, shrubs, and other herbs. These three are females which typically are the grayish-blue hue with males being the more red-brown, with the exception of Pyrite being that reddish color here at the San Antonio Zoo

The spectacled bear -aka the Andean bear- is the only native bear to South America! They get their name from the white-ish tan around their eyes almost looking like eyeglasses, though not all have the full facial markings like Curt here at the San Antonio Zoo. Their lifespan is about 20 years in the wild and some getting closer to 40 in captivity. These bears are excellent climbers with their front legs being longer than the back to assist them in doing so. They are omnivores, with their favourite food being fruit, cactus, bromeliad hearts, and the soft parts of palm trees. They will also eat insects, small rodents and birds (especially ground nesting species) but their teeth are designed more for grinding vegetation and only about 5% of their diet is thought to consist of meat. These bears range in size from 5-6 feet long, standing 2-3 feet high at the shoulder. Fully grown they average out weighing anywhere from 180 for females and 240 for males. The spectacled bear’s only predator is humans, although illegal they are still hunted due to their organs being valued in traditional medicine practices.

The reticulated giraffe -living about 20 years in the wild and 25-30 in captivity- got its name from its net like pattern. Similar to reticulated pythons, it almost looks as if you threw a net over their base coloring. There are four distinct giraffe species identified (Masai, Southern, Northern, & Reticulated) with multiple subspecies. Giraffes are able to eat up to 75 lbs in a day and spend about 20 hours a day doing so. The boys here at the San Antonio Zoo, Alan (dad), Cosmo (older brother), and Brayden (younger brother not pictured) eat an array of brows including chinese elm, ficus, brachychiton, and a non thorny type of acacia. They also receive hay and a pellet food specifically curated for giraffes. These towering animals are ruminants just like cows and goats, meaning they regurgitate their food to rechew and redigest to get the most nutrients out of it as possible. Reticulated giraffes (males) tend to range in size from 16-18 ft, while Masai giraffes being the tallest species can reach 18-20 ft. Males can weigh up to 4,800 lbs while females can get up to 2,600 lbs!

Meet Red and Sarge! These two are a Green winged macaw and a Military macaw at the San Antonio Zoo. There are at least 17 known species of macaws, being the largest members of the parrot family. These birds tend to live in flocks of 10-30 and typically mate for life, living to around 50-60 years old in the wild; The oldest macaw recorded was said to be 114 in captivity!

Babirusas -native to Indonesia- have four individual species, Kreacher here being Babyrousa celebensis. His unique tusks grow up out of the snout and curve back towards the forehead. These tusks can reach up to 17 inches and can grow back into the skull. Interestingly enough they aren’t use for fighting as babirusas tear into their hind legs and “box.”
