Unfortunately my grandparents are no longer here and this home—their home—in Birmingham, Alabama was the heartbeat for the Simmons family. Countless road trips down I-20 were the corridor to so many great memories. Now my father sits next to its emptied and neglected body, like the uncanny tension of reconciling the shell of observing a deceased loved one with the living person you once knew. These are the words of my father when I shared this photo with him: “The soul of this home has long departed; nevertheless memories of our youth, celebrations, and family gatherings will hopefully endure ❤️”

I’ve had this image for a while. I keep coming back to it so I thought I’d share. This is my youngest son enjoying the beach and squishing his toes int the wet sand.

Hey..it’s been several months since I posted any new photos. My love for photography has absolutely not waned but life has kept my busy. I took this photo months ago and never got around to sharing it. I continue to be so grateful I have photography. It’s my dear friend that I can confide in, and be free to be me.

I am trying to expand my toolbox to include the niche of product photography. It’s a WHOLE other beast! I must admit, my confidence level is low doing these shots. This is very different (so far) than doing normal portrait work or street photography. I am still debating if I enjoy it, but I know there is opportunity with a different set of clients. What I do enjoy is being able to take my time as I setup the props and the lighting. I also enjoy the instant results and the ability to refine as much as I want in real time.

Photos from my latest romp around San Antonio. I was drawn to the parts of the city that were emptied out by the rain and cold. I favor the stillness. Interestingly, as I walked down a vacant street of boarded up buildings, I happened upon a courtyard with a large steel bust of Vladimir Lenin. It sat in this courtyard like an oasis (not speaking politically) in the midst of a seemingly condemned section of the city. Honestly, if it weren’t for my travels to Russian I probably would not have recognized the sculpture. It reminds me of the even larger Lenin bust I visited every time I traveled to Ulan Ude, Russia.

I want to thank Erik and Jenn for driving an hour from Austin for a photo session with me. When a family drives that far for you there’s internal pressure to deliver. Even when anxiety is high you have to display external confidence to your clients, otherwise that tension will come across in the photos because it will make them feel uncomfortable. Erik is my old college friend, and he reached out to me once he saw we moved to San Antonio. It was just like old times, except a little grayer 😄. Pro Tip: candy and music playing over wireless speaker keeps the mood relaxed and playful.

Late posting but wanted to share photos from a photo session with a friend who I’ve known most of my career. It’s great working with him again and seeing the great things he’s doing.
