A quiet evening in the marsh.

For these frames, I wanted to pull back rather than make the bird fill the photograph to show the egret as part of the marsh, surrounded by the dark reflections and greens of its habitat. One frame captures the stillness; the other, a brief moment of feeding.

Sometimes the habitat tells as much of the story as the bird.

A quiet evening in the marsh.

As the light faded over a Texas wetland, this Great Egret moved slowly through the shallows, pausing between careful strikes at the water.

For these frames, I wanted to pull back rather than make the bird fill the photograph—to show the egret as part of the marsh, surrounded by the dark reflections and greens of its habitat. One frame captures the stillness; the other, a brief moment of feeding.

Sometimes the habitat tells as much of the story as the bird.

Sometimes getting closer means getting lower.

I lay flat on the sand at the Beach and let the Royal Terns appear just above the shoreline flashes of orange in an otherwise quiet frame.

Royal Terns are hard to miss when they’re calling overhead, but from down here, they felt completely different. Less about the bird filling the frame, and more about the space they belong to.
