Looking Glass

It is astonishing how you can find the most breathtaking beings in the most remote locations. The Red Desert of Wyming is a vast unfenced wild area with 6 million acres to explore. When I was there last month I was surprised to discover Looking Glass on the first evening! This gorgeous appaloosa stallion leads a small band and travels with several others including Terre Haute, Rincon and Storm. This was a photo from when I first spotted him.

Anyone want to guess who is on the cover of the 2027 Classic Calendar 🥰

The day started with the excitement of finding bachelors unseen since the Stookey fire. Then to finding a band (Paco’s band) unseen since end of May. While trying to spot each member through the trees smoke began rising from the Simpson Mountains.
With cell service a call was made and down we went to see if there were crews on seen or not. After that we headed to search another area and then head back to see if we could spot Paco’s band again…. Only to spot another fire, the Slater fire.
Through the smoke filled skies off we ventured to hopefully find horses and not fires. In that short drive we experienced a lightning show, pounding rain, gusty winds and this odd wavy white mist.
Yearling Yukon’s bright coat gave them away. We tracked them slowly approaching knowing they were no longer keen to human presence. Back to the vehicle we went to move approach positions. The sun was almost gone but appeared just long enough to give us the beautiful double rainbow with the band in the middle. They had run a ditch line to pop out much closer to us than they were previously. Revealing to us their hidden surprise. A bounding little black filly full of energy. With the light waining we knew photos would be great, but sometimes it is simply about capturing a moment that will never repeat itself. I hope to bring you more of this darling filly and her family soon.

Foal Friday
Talisman Resting Near a Cool Stream

We discovered young Talisman in the Red Desert earlier this summer and I was excited to see him again this past week when we visited again. This beautiful fluffy c**t is part of a four horse band including his grey sire Guardian, sorrl pinto momma Corazon and black mare Silhouette. The entire group will be featured in my upcoming 2027 calendar. Like his sire, Talisman is going grey and when I saw him this past week the change is even more obvious. He is a gentle spirit who like to stay close to his momma although he is beginni g to explore the world more. I loved this quiet moment near twilight when he found the perfect spot to rest next to this stream. I sat nearby watching his family graze while Talisman rested and the last rays of light left the sky.

Green Mountain Mist

Maybe this is why they call it Green Mountain? We arrived to the astere mountain early in the morning and began climbing higher and higher into a dense misty fog. We drove in the fog for a few hours determined to find wild horses. When I finally spotted dark shapes in the mist we parked our car and walked toward them. It was magical watching this band. Ethereal ghosts who would walk away, turn and walk back towards us. We saw them again later in the day under a blue sky, but it is these moments in the mist when they were ghosts that I will remember forever.

Soak up the Sun!

Barbados running his beautiful family into water on a perfect summer day last summer. I thought with all the rain we have had in Utah during monsoon this year this photo would remind me that blue skies are coming again soon! Barbados is a black stallion of Salt Wells and a force of nature.

I am traveling this week so should have some nice Green Mountain video for you tomorrow!

Monochrome Monday
Back in Black

When I was in the Lost Creek HMA last month I was blown away by the beauty of Terre Haute (french for high ground) aka The Black. I was there looking for the legendary appaloosas but this is the stallion who took my breath away. Confidence and raw beauty all rolled up into this incredible band stallion. And that mane....

Wild

Some horses are so wild they never come down to the valleys and we only see them when we head into the hills in search of them. It has been a while since we have seen this band led by Fritz. It was so comforting that Trinity's 2026 c**t, who we christened Felix (fortunate, lucky one) is looking healthy and happy. Trinity lost her c**t Torin last year when he was only a few days old. Felix is shy and has such a friendly face. Older sister Saskia is now a three year old mare who is very sweet on Fritz (her sire disappeared back in 2023). The first picture is such a nice family photo of this group and the rest are of little Felix who I would estimate to be about 4 months old. It really did make my heart happy to see this young c**t after shedding tears last year over Torin.

Out of the Shadows

Just after sunset after lots of searching we found something we weren't even looking for!
Introducing Shadowsong
This sassy bay going grey filly out of Sparrow and Tempest seems to have plenty of her momma's renowned spice and a curiosity that is all her own. Less than a week old and she is already romping all over the place! There is nothing like a new baby to bring a smile to my face!
