In this long post hiatus, I have over two dozen shoots I’ve been wanting to share, but this is a portrait and experience that re-inspired my thirst to share.

I went to Costa Rica in November to photograph a retreat and it opened up this whole new world to me, literally and figuratively.

So many stars aligned for this trip. Within a week’s notice, I was touching down into Costa Rica not knowing if the retreat was legit or if I was about to be trafficked for an organ donation I didn’t sign up for.

My favorite picture and arguably the best memory I have of the trip is with Emmanuel, Ashley - pictured here - and Nikki. Nikki makes a pilgrimage to Costa Rica yearly and I was always curious what called to her there so often.

Emmanuel and Ashley are a big reason for this trek and after meeting them I understood why. They are incredible humans who quietly built an amazing life, surrounding themselves with art, creation, and the calm & connected life that a place like Costa Rica can offer.

I’ve toyed with the idea of travel portraits and this has solidified that desire.

Making art and posting the last few weeks has felt so incredibly disingenuous and I haven’t had the heart to.

2 weeks ago I was walking downtown with a friend and we saw an unmarked black vehicle with what looked like federal agents inside close to our businesses. My first thought was, “f**k, this is it.”

Despite my “protection” as a naturalized U.S. citizen from Mexico, being apolitical no longer feels like a neutral option. Neutrality in moments of injustice has felt a lot like complicity lately.

I’m embarrassed to admit how afraid I’ve been about speaking up against this administration because I don’t feel safe in the U.S. anymore, but I’ve also wondered who would be outraged on my behalf if I was taken into a detention facility and if I would be worthy of someone speaking on my behalf.

I grew up in with an authoritarian parent. Questioning the status quo wasn’t welcomed - it was punished. As a sensitive kid who asked a lot of questions, I spent a lot of my childhood crying and hiding because how powerless I felt having a father and older brothers that were bullies.

Recent events have resurfaced that feeling and the shame I used to feel about being Mexican. Growing up in the U.S. I experienced so many varying degrees of racism that hiding my ethnicity and eventually white washing my name to Andy felt like the only option, but the childhood version of me pictured here would feel pretty fu***ng disappointed that I’ve gone back to the learned behavior of hiding.

The glimmer of hope in this existential s**t show has been realizing that although I don’t have much power politically, I can use the eye I’ve cultivated for helping people look powerful in images. Photography helped me reclaim my own sense of agency and has created a life full of art, design, music, and connection that I dreamed of as a kid.

This post is mostly just a cathartic purge of the poison that has built up lately, a reminder to show up for the younger version of me and others that feel disenfranchised and powerless and a call to connect with local leaders that are championing compassion, charity, equality, environmental stewardship, and the protection of democracy.

For expression and body language that is nuanced and textured - you need time.

Fun fact, the majority of images ordered by clients are after the first hour of shooting! That’s the secret sauce.

Unless your job puts you in front of a lens on the daily, there is a level of vulnerability, terror, and nerves that will always create a wall from connection.

I loved capturing this shot a few hours in. The goal was to feel the empathy Chris projects into the world, despite a cooler toned image and grounded body language that would otherwise feel too precise/surgical.

As another fellow nerd that can’t help but smile at the joy of being alive, getting to do good work, and is absolutely obsessed with his craft, this branding session was an absolute pleasure.

I think there’s some people that are pre-destined for their careers. I have zero doubt in my mind that Chris came into this world smiling and his mission was to make the world smile a little more in return.

This last year I tried to challenge the perception that luxury branding and warmth are somehow mutually exclusive. The goal with the shoot was to preserve Chris’ genuinely charismatic demeanor, introduce color theory that aligned with elements of precision and polish, and overall elevate the visuals in his brand to match the work he does.

Manifesting more radically passionate people for 2026 like Chandana.

She’s brilliantly nerdy and relentlessly optimistic about the work she does. I know this because her goal for her work seemed absolutely insane for Utah - but she relented.

Chandana is the Executive Director and co-founder of Altitude Lab, where she supports early-stage entrepreneurs at the most vulnerable and formative moments of their journey.

Altitude Lab focuses on digital health and life science founders - which meant we had a lot of conversations reminiscing our biology/science backgrounds in college.

This studio has been my home and my work studio, on and off, for more than three years now.

I remember deeply romanticizing the idea of living so close to work; that I could wake up and be a room away from creating.

As a kid, I used to dream about living in a loft like this: high ceilings, concrete floors, light pouring in, grand piano, art everywhere, a space that felt like it belonged to an artist.

I feel really grateful to have honored this childhood dream, but I’m excited to make this a space purely for creation and art.

People usually come in for photos, but they leave with permission.

Permission to be whatever version of themselves feels most aligned.

Beate built a successful career as a project manager, became a grandma, moved to Utah and then decided to design a career around her life & vision.

This was a full reinvention that she needed visual evidence for.

I never knew how my ability to connect with people would be such an asset in my career until I started looking at before and afters and realized that was the missing magic sauce in photos.

This is Beate Lauf.
After a few hours of chatting, sipping coffee at her house and talking about life/business/branding - she trusted me completely with her vision. She let me redesign everything - hairstyle, outfits, mood/expression.

She has this beautiful dichotomy of grandmotherly warmth with German-engineered precision. A truly fun thing to try to capture.

Thanks to for the amazing hair and makeup.

Rafa, the founder of Vecchio Home, is amongst one of the greats in my list of people that I’ve meet in Salt Lake City. What I’ve loved the most about him is his boldness. He’s the kind of person who’s willing to bet big. The risks this man has taken for the sake of his vision would put people in the hospital lol. The command thread though, is his willingness to bet on himself and his vision.

In meeting him, I’m reminded of my own mission. He’s a kindred spirit in that he’s a craftsman who chases perfection and details because he knows that’s where the magic lives in his art.

Today is his open house in his studio in downtown SLC and I can’t recommend it enough. Go be inspired and transformed by a man with a vision that is expressing through interior design.

A practice I’ve been really trying to develop is recognition that this is the life I craved for so long. Down to the studio, type of art, and people I’m surrounding myself with.

If someone told me years ago that I would be spending days with clients, drinking espresso, having deep talks, and playing/creating art - I would’ve called it a pipe dream.

The goal post has stopped moving and I’m enjoying the ride.

The fine art bo***ir collection has been an opportunity to explore themes in embodiment, presence, power, sensuality, but most importantly the nuance within all those themes.

Bringing them together makes for images that just take your breath away like this.

Thank you to for the incredible hair & makeup and creating such a fun environment and .a.lima for being part of this collection.
