I've been quiet on socials again, but I've also been working on this in the background. So excited to bring MonsoonCon back in 2026!

MonsoonCon is back for 2026, and I’m excited to share that Jim Tang Photography will be joining us as this year’s keynote speaker.

Jim’s work has shaped how many of us think about photographing storms. His approach blends technical precision, field awareness, and timing in a way that turns difficult conditions into repeatable results. He’s also one of the most thoughtful voices in the storm photography community right now, and having him open the day sets the tone for what this event is meant to be.

After several years away, MonsoonCon returns on June 27, 2026 at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. This has always been a gathering built specifically for Southwest storm photographers and chasers!

We’ll be announcing additional speakers over the coming weeks, covering forecasting, lightning capture, field technique, and creative approaches to photographing the monsoon.

If monsoon season is the part of the year you plan around, this is the place to be!

Rule of thirds. Low ISO. Only shoot at golden hour. Yeah, I’ve heard it all too.
But honestly? Some of my favorite images happened when I let go of the “shoulds” and just trusted myself.

I wrote a new post about the best advice I ignored and why showing up, messing up, and breaking the rules sometimes leads to the best work.

Got a rule you’ve broken that paid off? I’d love to hear it!

Some of my favorite shots have happened when I stopped thinking about what anyone else might say and just shot what felt right.

When you’re not trying to impress anyone, it’s easier to enjoy the process and trust your gut.

What’s one photo you took just for you?

Full moon tonight. Not great for astro, but still one of my favorite excuses to step outside and just slow down. I might shoot it. I might just watch it rise and enjoy the quiet.

Either way, it’s a good night to look up.

I used to avoid the histogram like it was optional…

Now it’s one of the first things I check before and after every shot. Same with metering modes, once you get how they work, they make shooting in tricky light so much easier.

I just put together a blog post breaking both down in a way that actually makes sense (no techy overload). If you’ve ever second-guessed your exposure or felt like the camera wasn’t seeing what you were, it’s worth a read. Check it out!

Some climbs are quiet, but still steep.

The Redwoods reminded me, growth takes time, and strength often shows up in the struggle.

There’s something about being under the stars with no pressure, no plan, and no one to answer to.

This one was taken out in the Uinta Mountains, a quiet night, a little cold, and exactly what I needed. No agenda… just a chance to breathe, look up, and let the camera do what it does.

Sometimes, getting back to the basics is the reset you didn’t know you needed.

Some places just don’t let go of you...

These were a few of my favorite moments from before and during my recent workshop in Hanksville. A mix of quiet scouting time and shared discovery with the group, this landscape always hits differently. I keep coming back every year, and every year it gives me something new.

What’s one location that keeps calling you back?

June Skies – Milky Way Season is Here

June is all about warm nights, dark skies, and the heart of Milky Way season. It’s the perfect time to capture those sweeping arcs of the Galactic Core, experiment with twilight blends, or dive into deep-sky imaging under a New Moon.

If you’re looking to push your skills this month, I’ve put together a guide with key dates, tips for capturing summer nightscapes, and ways to make the most of seasonal changes. Check it out on the blog: www.tensixphotography.com/eclipse-blog

What’s on your shooting list this month?

Aperture isn’t just about light, it also helps you create separation in your scene, adding depth and a sense of scale. I like to use a wide aperture when I want to isolate a foreground element and create a beautiful, creamy bokeh that draws the eye into the frame, while still letting the background tell its own story.

So many photographers set their landscapes at f11 and forget it! What’s your go-to aperture for creating that sense of depth in your landscapes?

I love seeing the places others explore, the trails you’ve hiked, the peaks you’ve climbed, and the quiet corners you’ve discovered. It’s a constant reminder that there’s always more to see, more to capture, and more to share.
