Hidden gem lake
I found this lake years ago down a gravel road. Now I stop in every time I'm in the area. The mornings here are serene especially with the fall colors in the background

Pop up color
I rarely travel without a drone and for good reason. There's beauty all around but seeing it from the air is awe inspiring

Patience is a virtue and the best things in life worth having take time

As we hiked up I understood how the cloud forest became named as such. Looking across the valley are tropical mountains who's peaks are hidden from view. Such a scene is imagined in a video game or James Cameron movie.

We turned the corner and saw the guard house structure, beyond that nothing but a sea of clouds. The green grass and stone building contrasting the ever expansive white background. A mere glimpse to what hidden gem awaits.

Roland, our tour guide, told us of his hundreds of visits there are clouds maybe a tenth of the time and usually clear quickly. How did we get so lucky? Finally, after waiting for most of the morning, the rolling puffs passed and revealed the ruins before us.

I rarely get start struck but Machu Picchu is truly awe inspiring. To view the site in person is truly amazing, but to have it uncloaked in such cinematic fashion was an experience like no other. I imagine this is similar to how Hiram Bingham felt when he first trekked up the mountain.

After soaking in the wonder that lay in front of our eyes, we continued on into the stone buildings. The clouds never fully lifted, instead they waited, as if ready to envelope the ruins and return them back to the mystery of the ancient world.

Who's ready for this journey?

How many colors do you see? All these pigments are natural and hand made... Amazing!

The first major stop on this trip was in Chinchero in the sacred valley in Peru. While I wasn't planning to travel to another continent just to end up back on a farm, I'm glad I did.

I learned so much and it was enlightening to see how farming is done in another culture. The people here still farm in much the same way they have for hundreds of years. As you can imagine, one major product is clothing made from alpaca fleece.

Personally I was fascinated with the vibrant colors and intricate designs of these products. The natural dyes used come from local substances such as tree bark, roots, plants, flowers and even bugs. Yup the deep red color comes from grinding up Cochineal, a small insect living in cacti.

After alpaca yarn is died, it is hand woven into complex designs that can include mountains, birds and even alpacas. The ladies here told us how after learning the craft when they're young, and years of practice, they can weave the designs simply from memory. I don't know about you but that's a lot of lines to memorize.

Do you think you could weave like this? Or have the stomach for dying the yarn?
