Subadult California condor 1238 looking regal as he surveys his fellow flock members. As a juvenile condor, he is lower in the flock’s social hierarchy. One of the reasons it is beneficial for 1238 to be aware of his surroundings is in case an older bird decides to pull rank and establish their dominance over him. Younger birds will also try to hang out with older birds, possibly to ascend the ranks within the hierarchy and to learn from them (this is my guess).

As 1238 matures, it is very likely that he will also haze younger birds and the “littles” will, in turn, try to hang out with him. Such is life as a California condor. The social dynamics are forever changing.

On a stormy day, 13yr-old male CA condor 692 approaches one of his mates, 7yr-old female 966 “Pixchi”. After 692 finishes preening, they survey their territory amongst the High Peaks together Pinnacles National Park.

A yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventer) or “rock chuck”, hangs out on their boulder pile Yellowstone National Park.

I have loved this species since we first met in the Rockies decades ago. I’m so happy this one paused long enough for me to snap a photo. Ughhhh! Sooooo cute! 🥰

To prevent overheating in the warmer months, American bison shed their winter coats through spring and summer. During this time the textures of their fur are quite interesting. A friend likened the patterns created by this shedding to land masses on a map. I couldn’t agree more. SO cool, both literally and figuratively!

A small rock on his purchasing surface piques the curiosity of two-year-old California condor 1310.

In addition to being social animals, CA Condors are super curious, often exploring their environment. As seen here, this sometimes involves using their beak. So cute! 😊💕
