Phil Kahnke Photography Most of my time with a camera is spent chasing waterfowl, but you'll find an occasional landscape shot or two in here.

Had the opportunity the other day to sneak back out to the woods after shooting my turkey and snap a few photos of some plants and also a group of turkeys that came in. They are without a doubt much more difficult to get great photos of than a duck.

I’m gonna do a little mini-series where I post some photos of a species and I am going to put down some words/feelings that the images or the species make me think of.
1. November
2. Success
3. Excitement
4. Enthralled
5. Thought consuming

I’d love to hear what others feel with a word or two.

Photo 1. This shot feels so weird, with no sky or background it almost feels like a taxidermied duck just floating there in space.
Photo 2. Just a greenhead coming in. He’s gotten his chest feathers pulled on by other drake’s during the mating season, hence the missing patch.
Photo 3. Yesterday I put a photo of a greenhead looking downward as he was landing on here so figured I’d put this one of a greenhead looking upward at something flying above. It’s pretty cool that they are absolutely amazing bird identifiers. What I mean by this is that they can for sure tell an eagle from a red tail hawk from a harrier from a seagull from a heron….etc. they know which one to be afraid of and which ones just to keep an eye on.

I love these photos where I’ve caught a duck (generally the ones I see doing it are mallards and pintails) looking down to check out where it’s landing.

Rippin’. Seeing a flock of bluebills rip across the water like that is a top tier waterfowling experience.

A sharp-looking greenwing on a calm morning. The reflections are a nice bonus.

The quickest, slowest duck, around. Mr Bluewing Teal. Their slow top speed is hard to believe after you’ve had a flock of 20 of them rip past you from a direction you weren’t looking. They’re in & out of the decoys before you knew it, leaving everyone scrambling to grab a gun.
