Special request!

After almost every session or gallery delivery, I receive text messages, emails, or reviews that gush about how in love parents are with their photos, and how they will cherish them forever. I love getting this kind of feedback, and it truly pushes me to keep doing what I do.

One of the only things I’ve never been able to experience is getting to see the look on a clients’ face when they see their gallery for the first time. Many moms tell me about how they are crying happy tears looking through the images, but I’ve never been able to witness that expression of joy!

So, my question…are there any upcoming clients who would be willing to film themselves when opening and viewing their gallery for the first time? Give me a 😭 in the comments if I can convince ya with a $10 off coupon!

This was my second shoot with Stevie. At the beginning of both sessions, her parents have expressed how they want her sessions to be “for Stevie” and not for them. Essentially they don’t want to place any expectations on Stevie for sitting still, a perfect smile, or that familiar giggle. They just want Stevie to be Stevie and for me to click my little camera button while Stevie expresses herself without their prompting.

As a parent, that is such an amazing lesson for me, and I hope it can be for you too. Sometimes we (read: I) put too much pressure on our kids to be who we want them to be or to do the things we think they should do. Instead, we should be observing who they already are, celebrating those characteristics, and teaching them that it’s okay to be who they feel that they are inside.

Now, in case you’re wondering…I did manage to capture that perfect smile and familiar giggle. 😆

During a recent session, a parent marveled at my ability to capture the quiet, solemn, “real” moments in between moments of pure joy or laughter. I let the parent know that that skill is one of the things that I’m most proud of. It’s no easy task to get a child to express a full range of emotions all within 10-15 minutes. But after years of practice, I can assure you that it’s a skill that I have perfected little by little. This session is such an amazing display of that range.

A portrait photographer’s job is to capture his/her subjects expressing themselves in a way that is authentic and natural. The best photographers create environments that feel safe and somewhat familiar to the people we are photographing.

So what feels safe and familiar to kids?  Playing.

Laughing.

High fives (a million of them).

Smiling.  A friend.

One of the tips I give for preparing your child for their session is explaining to them that they’re going to meet a new friend. From the moment they walk in the door, I’m trying to let them understand that I’m safe, fun, silly, and interesting - just like you would want any good friend to be.  When I’ve established that friendship connection with your kiddo, that’s when the real magic can begin to happen. That’s when the reservations melt away and joy shines through. And when joy leads the way, the photos follow naturally.
