“Staring Sandhill” Sandhill cranes are large birds standing up to 4 ft (1.2 m) tall with a wingspan of almost 7 ft (2 m). They are omnivores that migrate throughout North America. While their population is fairly stable, habitat degradation and loss are a real threat. (400 mm, f5.6, ISO 800, 1/500)

“Say What?!” The turkey tangle frogfruit is a species that belongs to a family of flowering plants found in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. This particular species is native from the southern US to South America. The small clusters of flowers, measuring about 1/2 inch or 1.25 cm across, attract a wide variety of pollinators. These low, quick growing plants can spread out and help to prevent soil erosion, too. (278 mm, f9, ISO400, 1/1000)

“Everglades Sunrise” The rising sun casts a glow across a foggy early morning in Everglades National Park. Encompassing about 1.5 million acres across the southern end of Florida, the Everglades is a wide slow moving river that runs from Lake Okeechobee into Florida Bay. Established as a National Park in 1934 and a World Heritage Site in 1979, the Everglades plays host to hundreds of species of plants, birds, mammals, and reptiles. Over time, this biodiverse ecosystem has been impacted by drainage and disruption by roads, canals, agriculture, and development. (200 mm, f7.1, ISO 100, 1/400)

“Open Wide” A black skimmer chick works to swallow a whole fish brought by one of its parents. Black skimmers form pairs for life and share the responsibility of tending eggs and young chicks. (400 mm, f9, ISO 200, 1/640)

“Patient Predator” A female golden silk spider hangs in her web waiting for unwary prey become entangled. Also referred to as banana spiders, these are among the largest orb-weaver species in the U.S. (135 mm, f8, ISO 800, 1/160)

“Dig In!” Following a retreating wave, a sanderling plunges its short beak into the wet sand hoping to find a tasty treat. These small wading birds sustain themselves by randomly probing for invertebrates that burrow beneath the surface. (312 mm, f5.6, ISO 125, 1/1250)

“You’ll Never Take Me Alive!” Having just been plucked from its sandy burrow, a fiddler crab raises its claws and scurries for safety as a ruddy turnstone closes in. Despite its best efforts, the crab was not successful in this “David vs. Goliath” encounter. (360 mm, f5.6, ISO 100, 1/640)

“Wings Wide” With wings spread and feathers ruffled, a reddish egret chases prey around the shallow water. This is a significant contrast to most egrets and herons, which are content with waiting patiently and striking at prey quickly. Found exclusively in coastal areas near mudflats, reddish egrets are threatened throughout their range due to habitat loss from sea-level rise and coastal development. (312 mm, f5.6, ISO 125, 1/1250)

“Passion in Purple” Native to the southern United States, the purple passionflower is a fast growing vine that produces ornate, blue-purple flowers. Unable to self-pollinate, the flowers secrete a sweet nectar that attracts a variety of pollinators. The fruit, known as a maypop, is edible and can be used for flavoring or its juice. (340 mm, f9, ISO400, 1/500)

“Banking Toward The Beach” A black skimmer takes a sharp turn to return to its nesting colony on the beach. During breeding season, these birds court and mate in large groups. High on the beach by the dunes, the female makes a depression in the sand, called a scrape, where she will lay her egg. Given the location of these colonies, they can often be disturbed by predators, people, and pets. (312 mm, f11, ISO 640, 1/1600)

“Fooled You!” A pair of viceroy butterflies float around their habitat without much concern about predators. Monarch butterflies, which have very similar colors and patterns to the viceroy, contain toxins that make their predators sick. The viceroys don’t contain toxins but are typically left alone by predators because of the similarities in appearance to monarchs. (371 mm, f10, ISO400, 1/1000)

“Looking Back” This Glossy Ibis had come in close to a home likely in the hope of finding a tasty treat. It seemed to be glancing over its shoulder wary of potential threats. (400 mm, f8, ISO 100, 1/250)
