the culture significance of hair in the black community.
for many generations, people of color have been discriminated against for styles and textures that have become symbolic of blackness. as a result, afros and curls were often seen as “dirty” and “untamed” during the post-colonial era that idolized eurocentric aesthetics. braids were a common hairstyle worn to maintain these curls but over time became much more helpful to them during the days of slavery, using the braid patterns as maps to escape, hiding seeds in to use once they did, and so much more. with that eventually came the “black is beautiful” movement following the popularization of the afro pick. made specifically for natural black hair, the afro pick became a symbol of black power. inspiring the community to celebrate their natural hair styles and the beauty of afrocentric features. in today’s society, black hair is used as a form of self expression through braids, locks, twists, bantu knots, afros, and weaves/wigs.
