Twin newborn sessions require patience that I've come to genuinely enjoy.

You can't rush two babies. You can't schedule around their needs — you follow them. When one settles the other might not. When both are finally still, you work quickly and quietly because that window is short.

What comes out of that patience is something that shows who these two were before they were anything else — before names had weight, before personalities had words, before they knew they were siblings in the fullest sense of that word.

They already had each other. That's what these images hold.

The sunset behind them lasted about twenty minutes.

That's the thing about fall light in Minnesota — it's not reliable, it's not guaranteed, and it doesn't wait. The families who get it are the ones who booked before the season arrived, not after.

This toddler sat exactly like this for about thirty seconds before deciding he had somewhere more important to be. That's how it goes. You watch for the moment, you wait for the expression, and then it's gone.

That's what the photograph holds. Not a pose. A specific version of a specific kid on a specific evening that won't exist again.

Glass plate negatives are some of the most durable photographic objects ever made.

They're also some of the most misunderstood. Most people who find them in an attic or an estate sale assume the damage they see means the image is lost.

It often isn't.

The emulsion that holds the image on glass is remarkably stable compared to paper or plastic film. Scratches, silver mirroring, and surface damage can frequently be addressed through careful restoration — recovering detail that looks gone but isn't.

Photo restoration starts with understanding what you actually have. If you've found old negatives or damaged prints and don't know where to begin, that's exactly where I come in.

Fall in Minnesota has a specific quality and a specific window.

This is what it looks like when a family plans ahead — when they're not scrambling for a last-minute slot in October, not settling for whatever was left on the calendar.

They showed up when the light was still doing this. And now they have proof of who they were in this exact season.

Kids change between one September and the next in ways that don't announce themselves while they're happening. The height. The confidence. The way they lean.

If you've been thinking about fall family photos, this is the reminder that the window is shorter than it feels.

Newborns don't know they're being photographed.

They don't know how small they are. They don't know that their parents are watching them with that particular combination of exhaustion and awe that only exists in the first days.

They just sleep. They just exist.

And that's exactly what makes these images matter later — not because they're perfect, but because they're true. This is who she was in her very first days, before the world started shaping her into someone else.

Something has been taking shape here in Saint Paul.

I've been building a darkroom. A real one — film processing, analog printing, the chemistry and equipment that most photographers have never worked with firsthand.

There's a reason analog photography is coming back. Not nostalgia, not trend. It's the discipline of it. The way film forces you to slow down and actually commit to what you're seeing before you press the shutter.

Digital gives you unlimited chances to get it right. Film gives you 36 and asks you to mean every one of them.

I'll be sharing more about this soon. If you've been curious about film photography or darkroom printing, stay tuned.

Safelights are ON. 🔴✨

From custom shelving to our ventilation system, every single detail in this space is officially locked in. Standing in here with the red light glowing with everything complete feels surreal to me!

Building The Saint Paul Analog Photography Darkroom has been all about creating a dedicated, zero-pretension sanctuary—a place for local artists to step away from screens, slow down, and feel the magic of pulling real silver gelatin prints from fresh, eco-friendly EcoPro chemistry.

We are running final test prints this week before opening up our weekend membership blocks and studio access.

To keep the wet benches uncrowded and chemistry fresh, supervised weekend memberships will be strictly limited.

If you’ve been itching to get your hands back in darkroom trays or want to get back into printing, head over to the link to claim your spot on the waitlist now:

Most people walk into a portrait session expecting to be told what to do. Smile here. Look there. Chin down. Hold still. That's not what happens in this studio. The session follows your family's pace, not the other way around. If the baby needs to eat, we stop. If the toddler needs a minute, we wait. If you're nervous, we don't pretend you're not. The calm isn't manufactured. It's just the natural result of not rushing. What nobody tells you is that the best portraits don't come from perfect posing. They come from someone paying close attention while you stop performing.

Twenty-five years of watching families walk into this studio.

That's long enough to notice what stays the same and what doesn't.

What stays the same: the way a parent's shoulders drop when they realize no one is rushing them. The way a toddler who was hiding behind a leg eventually wanders over to see what's happening. The exhale when someone says "we have time."

What changes: the kids. Every single year they look different. Taller. More sure of themselves. A different way of standing. A different way of looking at their parents.

The families who book in August are the ones who walk into fall knowing they didn't miss it.

Stop scrolling through 500 images trying to find the one you actually like.

That's what most portrait sessions leave you with — a gallery of indecision and a hard drive you never open again.

This studio works differently. A few weeks after your session you come back. There's coffee. Your images on the studio screen, full size, the way they were meant to be seen. We watch them together and the right ones start to surface naturally — the frame you didn't expect, the one that makes you go quiet.

From there we build around your favorites. Wall art, albums, prints designed for your actual home.

You walk out with what matters and a clear plan for where it lives. No second-guessing. No knot in your stomach at midnight staring at a folder full of indecision.

That's the relief most families don't know they're missing.
