Getting married on the Feast of the Sacred Heart proved to be one of the greatest blessings in our marriage. At the time we thought WE were choosing our wedding date, but it’s clear in hindsight that God had chosen it for us and guided us to that date in so many ways. (Ps. pay attention to the date and the patron of the parish you get married at! There’s surely a providential reason or intercession that the Lord has prepared for you through it.) Both Ben and I would say we had a very moderate devotion to the sacred heart when we chose it, but it quickly unlocked a series of signs that showed us that God was always with us even when we couldn’t see it. God has a knack for leaving little breadcrumbs that reveal His presence. In the moment that sign might be hidden or feel like the faintest whisper. It really is a true act of faith to trust that He is always with us! And from time to time we’re given a grace that lifts the veil allowing us to see the truth that He was there all along.

As St. John writes in his epistle, “We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us.”

The same love He has for you.

The mass readings for today echo it tenfold. The scriptures remind us what it means to be loved by God. To remind us that God is love. That He dwells with us when we love each other and keep His commands. To remember that He chooses us individually and calls us to be His people. He chooses us precisely for our littleness, we don’t have to be the largest or greatest or “earn” his love because his heart is already set on us. He is faithful. He is merciful. He frees us from slavery, including the slavery that others impose upon us as well as the kind of slavery we inevitably enslave ourselves into through our sin. And when our hearts are heavy, burdened, tired…He gives us rest. He consoles. He heals. He removes the hardest parts of our hearts and creates a clean heart in us.

Perhaps you needed these reminders like I did too.
Whatever is going on in your life, make an act of faith to trust that God is listening to your prayers and take this opportunity to entrust yourself to His Sacred Heart❤️‍🔥

I have a newfound appreciation for weddings that happen right after Easter. Not only is the church beautifully decorated with an abundance of flowers (which surely draws your guests’ hearts into the deeper beauty of the faith), but it specifically dawned on me this year how the newlyweds have also spent 40+ days preparing their hearts during lent with prayer, fasting, and sacrifice. And honestly what better way is there really to prepare for marriage than that? These couples are gifted with a unique period of time before getting married to intentionally work on their relationship with God, grow closer to Him, remove distractions that get in the way, make sacrifices, and offer that up for both your own sanctity and for your future marriage. I am now convicted that all couples should go through a small “lent” of sorts in the weeks prior to the wedding and then making those last 7 days leading up into your wedding day ones that are filled with all the Easter joy of the resurrection. We could all benefit from that. And I am cherishing the gift these couples get in this season of the Church’s liturgical year! Have you ever thought of it that way?!

My heart is always moved when couples do a washing of the feet for each other at their wedding. Directly imitating Christ at the last supper.

In their first hours of being married, the couple begins practicing what it means to serve the other out of love, stepping back in humility, removing any selfishness rooted in the desire to be served, and instead choose to give of themselves.

If you’ve been in any kind of relationship, you know how easily the temptation comes to shift the spotlight to yourself:
Your needs.
Your frustrations.
Your “happiness” above another’s.
It is part of our human nature.

But then... moments like today (Holy Thursday) come around and you remember how our human nature is meant to transform and be like Christ.

So you look to what He did with his life.
He laid it down for his friends.
He took the lowly position to serve his friends.
Not by demanding recognition for what he’s done, instead he simply focused on doing acts of love.

St. Thomas Aquinas calls the moment when Christ washes the disciples feet as him “treading underfoot the universal tendency to pride” by emptying Himself.

Moments like this encourage me to reflect on the true goal of marriage: to mirror Christ and model His total, irrevocable love for the Church.
Laying his life down for her.
Not coming to be served, but to serve her.

Which is why moments like this when a husband and wife are kneeling before each other, mutually serving the other, are so beautiful! They are reflecting that exact kind of love that Christ showed his disciples.

And they are even starting their marriage this way from day one. Committing themselves to living their marriage out of this whole way of life.

In that simple and humble act they’re flipping the script on self-focus and choosing mutual self-gift instead.

And that’s precisely what our world needs. If every husband and every wife lived out their vocation this way, I am confident that we would see even more holy marriages, holy families. And that would even more so strengthen the body of Christ and in turn sanctify the world.

Still soaking in the beauty of this weekend. The Roccasecca Project hosted a conference for young adults in the twin cities to explore what it means to have holy relationships in all seasons of life. Starting the day with mass, listening to keynote talks, sitting side by side with peers made it so real that we are not meant to be on our faith journeys alone. We truly need each other. We need people older and wiser to share their spiritual insights gained from years of study and practicing their faith. We need friends and community by our side to shape and encourage us in our own pursuit of holiness. And we need the grace of Christ in the sacraments at the center of it all to strengthen and sustain us each step of the way, and above all to transform our hearts to be more like His.

Stay tuned for more roccasecca project events (an organization by St Thomas alum) to continue exploring these themes and for their opportunities of formation.
