It was a beautiful night bouncing between the Tombolos north of Grand Marais. the Tombolo just north of grand Marais is fully connected so it is a true Tombolo. The other one slightly further north east is not connected. I believe it is referred to as the Rock? I just take photos of it, is that correct?

I do sometimes enjoy the process of the photo more than the processing of the photo. This location gave me 590 images while trying to capture the motion of the water. I quickly narrowed it down to about 140 images. This is the image I have chosen to post first. If you watch the one minute video in my following post, you will see another version of this photo at the very end. in this image you can see more of the rocks exposed in front of the icy rocks in the foreground. The details in the foreground are so clean.

My plan was to find a field of flowers. I drove to a couple locations expecting to find some, but they were both empty and cut, probably being eaten by a cow. I continue driving through the Buffalo area and down country roads only seeing scattered patches of flowers. Well, that was a bust! Then, on my way to Cub Foods I noticed an empty lot south of Frankfort Parkway next to Northwest Bible Church. It was nicely covered in yellow and white flowers. And! Getting back lit at sunset.

This shot was captured on the Fourth of July weekend. I was awake shortly before sunrise and decided to walk down to the dock of the cabin. I could see the red glow as the sun was rising through the Canadian wildfire smoke. No clouds in the sky just the haze from the fires. Next to the steps leading down to the dock were some colorful flowers. I decided to go with this macro shot using the sunrise has the backdrops.

I’m so happy with the artist who produces my fine art canvases. You are looking at a 24 x 20 vertical print and a 20 x 30“ horizontal print. They are Museum Quality with a satin finish for additional protection. I can confidently assure you that you would be incredibly pleased with the quality of my fine art canvas.

This image was captured in the spring in Saint Michael, Minnesota. If you look closely, you can see the Catholic Church standing tall in the background.
This image will be proudly displayed at Great Lakes Chiropractic in St. Michael. It is a fantastic clinic and you now have something to look at while you get popped back into place. 👍

I always thought it was an old fishing dock, but after a quick search, I discovered it's actually from the late 19th and early 20th century railroad. It was built for the railroad cars to offload the logs into the water, which were then transported down to Duluth for processing. It's one of my favorite spots to visit on the North Shore. Now I know they had a greater purpose than a simple fishing dock.

Last weeks storms on the north shore created some intense waves that blasted the shoreline around Crystal Bay at Tettegouche State Park. I photographed that location multiple times that week, Thursday I decided to take the hike out to the point to see things close up. Unbelievable! It looks like another planet.

Crystal Bay Beach was getting rocked by the storm waves Tuesday evening as I was approaching my campsite. This is an impressive location during strong winds and freezing conditions. This combination of elements creates the massive waves that crash into the cliffs causing lake spray that covers everything on the cliff surfaces.

I return to this location several times throughout the week each time under different conditions. Amazing, I will post more of my favorites ranging from gray and moody, to a colorful sunset, all displaying the amazing ice covered trees.

Please like, comment and share these images. Want a print? I can do that, in fact, I would love to do that. I’ve got more incredible images to come from this recent trip.

This video is from the first morning of my trip to the north shore this week. Grand Marais had peak gusts of 64 miles per hour producing crashing waves throughout night. I had no idea the lake was throwing itself over the banks and flooding the campgrounds as I attempted to sleep through the rocking wind and thunder. I was able to navigate my way from my campsite to higher grounds working off a feeling of 90% confidence I knew where the road had been the day before. I made it out of the campsite and relocated to another site on higher ground.

I wrapped up the week and arrived home this morning with 5626 photos to sort out. For you old schoolers that’s 156 rolls of 36 exposures! That makes it sound excessive. I blame it on the waves and the need for continuous shooting. it was also a full moon this week. I did not expect to see the full moon, but even it decided to show up for a bit. I’m excited to get through the task of sorting and processing my favorite images.

Miramar Beach on the panhandle of Florida. Sunset over the beach.

It’s really hard to beat a view like this. I returned to Minnesota with 1513 images to sort through. I’ve narrowed it down to about 450. This is one of my favorites, for obvious reasons… it is the view off of the bedroom deck we were staying in.

This has been one of the frostiest winters I’ve seen in years. The frost in the Saint Michael area has been heavy on several occasions this year. This image was shot on the outer city limits of St Michael (Hanover?). With such heavy frost the landscape turns mostly black and white, it feels like I stepped back in time to1989 and photographing with my old Minolta camera and a can of b&w film.

Saint Michael sunrise in motion.

Seeing that it would be 11 below zero at sunrise this morning. I decided it would be a perfect time to test out a couple pieces of new winter gear. At 6 AM I grabbed the few pieces of gear I would need, and
headed east of Saint Michael to a parking areas near Pelican Lake.

I had some nice colors beginning to brighten the horizon and three shiny grain bins in the distance just to the side of the lake. Nice silhouettes, but just not what I was looking for, very ordinary. I certainly wasn’t expecting anything epic due to the clear skies and knowing the location, not to mention the fact that I had no intention of hiking….cuz… that would increase my core temperature and not give me an accurate test of my winter gear. Also, the perfect excuse to be lazy this morning. After about one hour of standing, I began doing “in camera motion” or “intentional camera motion”whichever term you prefer. It’s a simple technique that can make some interesting images. This one was my favorite. You can slightly make out the grain bins on the right side. It is an image of the horizon about 30 minutes before sunrise, with a foreground of snow and standing weeds and things.

With or without the addition of the lens flare, it is a colorful version of the St. Micheal sunrise this morning.

If you are curious, one piece of winter gear passed, and the other is getting returned lol

I do work with the finest printmakers. Fine art canvas, fine art metal and more if you are interested. Thank you.

What a beautiful Labor Day weekend in Wisconsin! The weather was perfect, the food was great, and the friends and family were great to be around. I of course did bring my photography equipment and was surprised by the aurora borealis making an appearance. I was unaware of this until I awoke one morning to see some incredible images. Fortunately another wave hit the following evening and I was able to capture some beautiful memories on the dock. The second wave was not as intense, but it was an exceptional evening, you can see the smoke on the right side of the photo as the Aurora on the left is beginning to develop. The aurora seem to peek from my viewing area at about 2 AM, this image was captured around midnight.
It is not often that conditions and location spontaneously develop for a perfect shooting scenario, a fire on shore, a beer in hand, calm waters, family and camera beside me. Wow!

With rising gas prices I chose to drive only as far as it would’ve cost me in fuel to drive to the North Shore a couple years ago… I made it from Saint Michael to the Stone arch Bridge in Minneapolis. I had forgotten how beautiful it was to walk the Stone Arch Bridge area. The lower path is my current favorite path. You can enter this path directly across from the Pillsbury building which is another interesting building to look at as you walk. I definitely suggest going off the path and following the trails you find. They are like your personal guide to the hidden secrets. If you see a path, you can bet there’s something interesting on the other end.

Frank Schott stone barn near Chokio MN.
Brownimagerymn.com

12:30 AM Saturday morning I awoke and realized I had fallen asleep on the couch. The rest of my household was still up getting ready for bed, I checked the weather and noticed they were clear skies. Then I checked the moon, looks like it’s gonna set at about 3:45 AM, interesting, dark sky doesn’t end until 5 AM… That gives me an hour and 15 minutes of darkness with the sky! My brain is telling me turn off the lights and crawl into bed, but my body is going through the camera bag checklist and picking up my tripod. Brain says “ It’s a two hour and 20 minute drive to that barn!“ body says “ Good point, too far to walk.” And it grabs my keys. Then carries everything into the car and begins driving. Safely on the freeway I become one with body and mind again feeling confident in my decision to shoot this old stone barn. I put this old barn location in my maps a couple years ago, but always found myself headed north rather than west for my night shoots. Today was the day! I reach the barn at 3:30 AM, started to shoot. I even had some mild northern lights behind me that you should see in a future post. It was cold, and I was underdressed, approximately 25° if I remember, so not life-threatening by any means lol. Gloveless with with frozen toes, I capture this image at about 5:10 AM, just after the dark skies ended giving it a little more blue in the sky. At 5:30 AM I started my return trip with a average cup of coffee and a bag of sunflower seeds from Casey’s. And! I got to enjoy a fog filled sunrise on the ride home. Perfect! Now… Stay awake.

Awesome as usual!
Hi Curt, I know Ben Cooper and if he is recommending you I know you are great. Could you give me any information possible on this night. I am very interested. I also need to figure if I should consider a hotel as I live in Minnetonka. I have never done this before and are you willing to work with someone like me? I have the olympus OMD M1 Mark II and I have a 24-80mm lens. Would this work. It is a f2.8?
Do you have your next workshop planned?
I was wondering how much you charge for prints of your beautiful pics. The ones I am interested in is the one with Split Rock Lighthouse and the one that you showed us today. Thanks.
gosh your work is amazing a simple elegance revealed after much skill...wow im blown away by your ability to take ordinary things and make amazing pictures.. Art...if you ever teach a workshop or class let me know..
your skills are amazing...
I'm making this panel into a wall hanging to replace the tapestry behind it. It will go perfect with the adjacent red wall with the sunflower picture I bought from you. I am now looking for a couple pictures of old barns and I'd like a picture of an old rusty truck for a Christmas present. Do you have these?
