On this day ten years ago I was on a plane traveling from Houston to Chicago thennnn Benton Harbor, MI to spend the final moments with my father.

Fast forward here I am on a plane traveling back home after a week of reset, relaxation and recharge. It’s funny how things happen like that.

This time of year always hits different. I didn’t get enough time with her but she impacted my life for years to come. I’ve learned so much about her upbringing in the last five years and there’s still so much to uncover. Love you Granny. 😘 STEELE here because of your prayers.

My Aunt Betty would’ve turned 75 today.
My fondest memories of childhood were hanging out at 1070 E. Main St.
Oh the stories we could tell.
I was told her Pizza Burgers were nothing to play with (thanks to having older siblings and cousins that had them 😂 ).
As the years go by I reflect on the family members that are now ancestors and how I wish I could go back to those days of traditional holiday gatherings.

Cherish yo people.

My Friday night…

held their annual fundraiser to continue providing free services for those grieving in Southwest Michigan. The partnership between The Final 48 Project and Lory’s Place birthed the Community Grief Alliance so I was honored to be in the room. I’m holding my prize from the libation pull table. Oh what a magical night. ❤️🖤💙 Ronnika

Let’s talk about milestones that can be laced with triggering memories. My father was more excited about my undergrad graduation than I was. He even reminded me of it in my annual Christmas card from him. One of the promises to him before he died is that I would finish grad school. I did that and so much more. As I approach another milestone this weekend I can’t help but think how excited he would’ve been for yet another goal accomplished. In a lot of ways I have used his death as my motivation to start or complete huge projects (Hello, Final 48 Project was birthed because of his passing). Celebrating the holidays and crossing the finish line again is bittersweet because he’s not here. How do you cope with celebrating big moments when missing someone so special? I don’t know if anyone else needs to hear it but I know I sure do.

Xoxo,
Ronnika

The 2nd Community Grief Brunch in partnership with the Community Grief Alliance ❤️🖤💙

On top of a global pandemic the community of Benton Harbor is also dealing with a Public Health epidemic GUN VIOLENCE. This brunch was timely.

I. Am. Full.
I’m grateful for the village continuously showing up and dedicated to more healing and love in this community.
