Spent a beautiful late summer day photographing Kerry-Ann on Mackinac Island for her senior photos. The Inn at Stonecliffe was the perfect spot to capture a variety of beautiful island views. Good luck Kerry-Ann on the rest of senior year!

Managed to find some of the migrating generation of monarch butterflies at Stonington Point in the Upper Peninsula last week. The peninsula, near Escanaba, is a resting spot for the butterflies on their journey to Mexico. They roost in large groups from dusk to dawn and take flight when the conditions are right for the rest of their trek south.
I saw groups of 15-25 butterflies when I was there Wednesday, August 27, but much larger groups can be seen in this area throughout the last two weeks of August and first two weeks of September.

Snakes, frogs, and turtles, oh MI!

The Cheboygan community celebrated Earth Day with a day of learning and activities promoting nature and conservation organized by Earth Week Plus, a committee that meets throughout the year to plan three months worth of events and excursions to connect people with their environment. The expo, held Saturday, April 20, at the Cheboygan Public Library, was the highlight of the three month period, during which hundreds of individuals enjoyed displays, played games, created projects, and learned more about Michigan’s flora and fauna.

This was such a fun assignment, and it was great to see some of the students I’ve been working with as a substitute teacher! Happy Earth Day!

The battle to regulate e-bikes on Mackinac Island has reach Lansing as the Michigan state senate voted to set a 15 mph speed limit on the state highway, M-185, surrounding the Island. Enforcing e-bike bans and restrictions has been an ongoing struggle for local law enforcement and the Mackinac Island city council.

In restricting the speed limit, lawmakers hope to control the use and discourage the abuse of e-bikes on the Island where motorized vehicles are banned.

E-bikes are even more prevalent during the winter off season when construction workers replace tourists and use the faster, easier mode of transportation to reach their work sites across the expanse of the Island.

Doug Duke, a fisherman and owner of Offshore Igloos Ice Fishing Adventure, looks out onto the thin, broken ice covering Burt Lake Friday, February 9, 2024. At this time last year, loyal clients would be out on the ice in the seven offshore igloos Duke has constructed himself for comfortable, convenient ice fishing. A minimum of eight inches of ice is necessary to safely support the trailers-turned-cabins, and this season’s mild temperatures have resulted in a barely there, thin layer of ice that Duke won’t even step foot on. For the first year ever, he has canceled all bookings.

The seasonal business is passion project for him that is constantly evolving. Since the pandemic, Duke has been building and improving these tricked out shanties. Solar panels offer electricity and heat among other amenities including a sink, stove, maximum eight person capacity, and even a television. For those committed fishermen, holes in the floor allow for fishing directly from the bunks. Some clients come with less experience. Seeing children use their first fishing poles or new anglers make their first catch is one of the highlights of the business, Duke said.

With many customers returning annually, Duke has missed the opportunity to reconnect with people that have become like extended family to him. Missing out on these interactions has been one of the hardest parts of the mild winter.

Innovation and a commitment to the customer experience has set him apart from other ice fishing experiences. But the seasonal, outdoor recreation business is unpredictable, and Duke has realized that he must adapt and pivot his adventure experience to survive. Instead of catering to his customers this winter, Duke will be focused on improving his igloos and thinking about new ways to bring people and fishing together.

In a season where winter events across northern Michigan have been cancelled, changed, or rescheduled, the future of winter recreation is uncertain. For Duke and his counterparts, adaptability will be crucial to success.

Six sturgeon will live to grow another year in Black Lake as the Michigan Department of Natural Resources canceled the 2024 lake sturgeon fishing season for the first time ever.

Officials determined that minimal and unsafe ice conditions would impede the department’s ability to safely and accurately enforce the harvest limit that protects the health and longevity of the highly regulated species.

But while the fishing season, which was set to begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3 was canceled, the traditions surrounding it continued.

The Black Lake Sturgeon Shivaree is an annual weekend of festivities that coincides with the sturgeon fishing season. This year’s schedule of events included live music, a poker run, youth activities hosted by Natureology, a live sturgeon and sea lamprey exhibit, raffles, winter yard games, and food and beverages. Sturgeon for Tomorrow, the event’s host, invests money raised from the weekend into lake sturgeon recovery, protection, hatchery, research, habitat conservation and outreach programs.
