The Northwoods just wouldn’t feel the same without the call of a loon echoing across the lake.
These birds aren’t just beautiful, they’re built for the water. Loons can dive over 200 feet and stay under for up to a minute. Their bones are actually solid (not hollow like most birds), which helps them sink quickly when they dive.
But here’s the wild part, loons need a runway. They need about 30 yards of open water just to take off. That haunting call you hear at night? It’s their way of staying in touch with their mate or warning off intruders.
