The Lava Look

This deceiving appearance may seem to be hot magma from a volcano. The “hot” is correct, but it is actually a colony of trillions of micro organisms thriving in near boiling temperatures. In these hydrothermal pools, the water is so acidic, it can burn holes in your clothing. These micro organisms need extreme environments in order to survive.

Heart Spring at Yellowstone National Park

This colorful 15’ deep spring got its name around 1959 by geologist George Marler because of its human heart shape.
With water temperature averaging 187.8 F (94.9 C), one wouldn’t think there would be life down there. Astonishingly, there are trillions of micro organisms called “thermophiles” creating the colors you can and can’t see. Yellows for warmer water and orange, brown, and green for cooler water.

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park

The wife and I took a road trip recently and one of the places we stopped was Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. My mouth dropped as she showed me this view!

Fun facts about the spring:
1. 🌈 Colorful Wonder: The Grand Prismatic Spring is famous for its vibrant rainbow-like colors, caused by heat-loving bacteria called thermophiles that live in the water.
2. 💧 Largest Hot Spring in the U.S.: It is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world, measuring about 370 feet (113 meters) wide and over 120 feet (37 meters) deep.
3. 🔥 Geothermal Power: The spring gets its heat from the Yellowstone Caldera, a supervolcano that lies beneath the park, fueling thousands of geothermal features.
4. 🌡️ Extreme Temperatures: The water at the center can reach temperatures around 160°F (70°C), which keeps it mostly sterile and gives it a deep blue color.
5. 🧪 Scientific Interest: Scientists study the spring to learn more about microbial life that can survive extreme environments, which may even hint at how life could exist on other planets.

The Curve To Touch The Top

In the quiet valley, a lone Aspen tree stood at the edge of a meadow, its slender branches reaching toward the sky. The surrounding forest had long since receded, leaving it isolated against the backdrop of towering peaks. The mountain, loomed in the distance, its jagged silhouette softened by the warm, amber light of the golden hour. As the sun dipped lower, the mountain seemed to glow, casting long shadows over the landscape. The Aspen’s leaves shimmered in the gentle breeze, their pale green turning to gold as the fading light kissed them. It was a moment of stillness—a single tree, standing resolute in solitude, framed by the timeless beauty of the mountain. The world felt paused, as if the light itself had taken a breath, holding the Aspen and the mountain together in quiet harmony.

Portrait

The portrait captures the rugged texture of Aspen’s trunk, its smooth, pale bark contrasting with the vibrant gold of its surrounding leaves. The golden canopy above filters soft light, casting a warm glow on the tree’s surface, highlighting the subtle knots and markings of the trunk. The composition exudes a sense of quiet strength, with nature’s delicate interplay of color and texture drawing the viewer into a peaceful, autumnal moment.

The Warmth

As the morning light breaks through the canopy, a golden sunburst spills across the forest floor, casting long shadows and bathing the landscape in warmth. The trees stand tall, their leaves gently swaying in the soft breeze, while the distant mountain looms majestically in the background. It’s a moment of quiet stillness, where nature’s beauty is both profound and fleeting, captured in the soft glow of dawn.

“Golden Peaks: Autumn’s Embrace at Sunset”

The photograph was a fleeting moment —vibrant hues of orange and gold spilled across the sky as the sun dipped behind the mountain. The trees below, dressed in their autumn oranges and yellows, seemed to glow in the fading light. It was a moment of perfect stillness, where nature paused to breathe, and the mountain stood as a silent witness to the beauty of change.

“Golden Reverie: Aspen Leaves Beneath the Sunburst”

Golden Aspen leaves fluttered to the ground, their edges kissed by the wind. They settled gently on the bushes below, like tiny sunbursts caught in a quiet moment. The air was crisp, and the earth cradled each leaf, a soft reminder of autumn’s delicate end.

The Annular Solar Eclipse. Here in Colorado, we got 80% of it! My wife Valerie & I got to experience our first one together. We had clear skies for the event to enjoy and photograph the entire progress. We wore a special kind of glasses and lens for the camera to see the eclipse with our own eyes that protected our eyes 100%. Next year, we’ll be chasing the solar eclipse to be in the path for totality.

Looking up

The sun peering through the aspen trees and lighting up the truck for the foreground helps adds an anchor and a leading line as I lean up against the tree waiting for the right moment for the sun to be uncovered by the clouds. To then back light all the leave above to enhance the richness of the colors and finally, lighting up the trunk to see more details of texture of the tree. Sometimes, you have to keep your head up to see the beautiful things in this world we live on.

Floating Mountain

Beginning of autumn was such a great time. Here in Estes Park, CO, fog kept rolling across the land creating beautiful conditions as if the mountains were floating in the clouds. This location was beautiful to experience for many reasons.

The Patch

A patch of aspen trees peaking with it’s autumn colors throughout the forest of a National park here in Estes Park, CO. Hiking along the trail in search of aspen tree with its colorful leaves has always been awesome. You never know what kind of composition of a photograph you’ll get. This year during autumn, I’ve been seeing the yellow colors being dominant throughout parts of the land. Rather than oranges and reds like I photograph last year, but that’s ok because it’s all still so beautiful!
