As I advance as a photographer, the biggest jump for me has been my commitment to becoming more of a proactive vs. reactive shooter. Two specific events transpired in the last couple of weeks that sparked this article. I met an older gentleman and we began talking gardening and bird feeding and how squirrels are so maddening and fun to watch at the same time. I pulled out my phone and showed him some of my photos. He, on the other hand, pulled out his wallet, six inches thick with photos to show me a rare squirrel with a white tail....

This month I returned to the Cedarville area in the UP to photograph several bird species that recently had their babies. We focused our efforts on four specific species, and Paul Rossi from Paulrossibirds.com set up blinds near nesting sites for better viewing opportunities and also not to disrupt their natural schedule. We also utilized long lenses so that we could shoot from a distance....

I don't normally post pictures of redwing blackbirds because they are everywhere and you usually can't see much detail outside of the wings. However, this morning as I was walking through the woods, this guy landed a few yards ahead of me and proceeded to sing to me for about 10 minutes.

I thought he deserved this post and time in the spotlight. Give him lots of love and I'll let him know tomorrow when I see him
