Long before Dogs on Paper existed, there was Cupcake.

This squishy 7-month-old bulldog was one of my early dog portrait sessions back in my San Francisco studio days under my former studio, Ann Hamilton, and this shot ended up featured in a 2007 issue of Rangefinder Magazine. Swipe to see the feature →

Almost 20 years later, that upside-down, belly-rub pose is still one of my favorite captures. Some things about how I shoot dogs haven’t changed at all — patience, a simple setup, and letting their personality lead.

Dogs on Paper had a lot planned for fall — a new session offering, new products, fall minis, and renewed energy to welcome new and old clients back to the studio on September 1st.

But during our summer break, we realized a break was so very needed. We’ve been nonstop with this for over four years, trying to create something special — beautiful portraits of the dogs who mean everything to their people.

We’ve collaborated with local businesses, donated time and sessions to fundraisers and rescue orgs, and poured ourselves into this little studio in more ways than we can list.

And as a one-person studio with a pug as an assistant and occasional stand-in model (he prefers napping to working), and hence the “we” in Dogs on Paper — we are just tired. We’ve run out of steam, so to speak.

We don’t want to close our doors. But we can’t keep operating at the pace we were, and we can’t keep giving our time and services away the way we have been. Studio overhead is real, and we’d really like to keep those doors open. It’s a tiny space, as some of you know, but it’s a meaningful one — it’s let us create memories for so many people who love their dogs.

As we move into the months ahead, we’ll be accepting a small number of portrait sessions through the end of November, before we break again for the holidays.

We’re not going anywhere. We’re just doing this differently now — slower, smaller, and only in the ways that feel right, and sustainable. Thank you for understanding, and for loving your dogs enough to bring them here. 🖤

What a month June has been.

I’m so thankful for a busy season at the studio — I won’t be taking portrait commissions during my summer break, but I’ll be back September 1st. So much to share before then.

This month brought dogs facing serious health challenges, dogs rescued after tragedy, and foster dogs who never got adopted out — instead finding their forever family in the very people who are fostering them. It brought dogs who answered the call for studio projects, and the quiet, unmistakable bond between every dog and their human. So many stories, walking through my studio door.

Every one of these beautiful dogs brought joy to their session. They just want to be loved — and the humans who brought them, love these dogs so deeply. It’s heartwarming to witness through my lens.

There are days this business feels impossible. But the dogs are the reason I keep doing what I love. They really do leave a pawprint on your heart.

And in the end, the love is what’s left. That, and the photographs. 🤍

I can’t wait to show you this summer as I’ll continue to post and share.

Meet Legend. He is, in every way, his name.

He walked into the studio, lay down on the set, and gave me this. First shot. A test shot, actually.

More to come. 🤍
