Here's a hard truth for business owners: visibility can matter more than ability. 👀

I came across this idea in a book called The Brand Called You, and it explains why highly skilled people lose clients to others who simply showed up more often.

In this video, I break down what that means for your business and the simple habit that puts you in front of the right people.

Watch to the end for the line from the book that stuck with me most.

Ready to be seen and become unforgettable? Let's talk. 💬

You know what happens when you try to explain everything your business does?

It’s like telling someone, “Go drink the ocean.”

You do a LOT.

You have all these services, capabilities, programs, accomplishments, reasons people should work with you…And you’re trying to give people all of it at once.

But people can’t consume the ocean. They need a drop.

Think about how a city is built. One brick at a time. You don’t hand someone a pile of bricks and say, “Here’s the city. Figure it out.”

You give them the foundation. You give them one brick.
Then another. And another. That’s what storytelling does. It gives people one meaningful piece of your business at a time.

A story that helps them understand why you exist.
Another that shows them what you believe.
Another that lets them experience the impact you create.

And eventually…they can see the whole city.

Stop trying to make people drink the ocean. Give them a drop worth remembering.

This is how most people make their videos and don’t even realize they look and sound just like this…

Politics aside, this was a good example of why you shouldn’t just read from a script.

When you read a script word for word, people can hear it. You sound careful instead of convincing, and your message gets lost.

Better approach:

✔️ Know the ONE thing you want people to remember
✔️ Jot down 3 bullet points, not a full script
✔️ Talk to the camera like it’s a friend who asked what you do.

Your story should sound like you. It will make all the difference in whether or not people tune out or lean in and believe what you’re saying.

The most expensive camera in the room has never made anyone cry.

Anyone can rent a high quality camera. Anyone can learn to edit. Neither of those is what you're really paying for.

Ask yourself: is your video content just shot well, or does it move people?

If your videos look beautiful but nobody's calling, donating, sharing or remembering you, you're tackling the wrong problem. People can't feel what you refuse to show them.

I don't just shoot and edit. I walk into the room, allow your "polished version" to slip away, find the human underneath it all, and turn that truth into something people can't scroll past.

Your story is already there. Let's find it.

You have three seconds to stop a thumb mid-scroll. 👀

Most videos lose that fight before it even starts.

In my latest video, I share what your hook needs to do to grab attention fast. Watch it, then go back and check your last opening. You might see it differently.

You don’t need a big production to tell a powerful story.

This entire story for Scratch Farm was filmed over Zoom and used photos and videos from a cell phone.

No big crew. No elaborate set. No expensive production day.

Just a great story, the right questions, and a conversation that uncovered the why behind the business.

Scratch Farm is the result of a lifetime of experiences—from growing up with a deep connection to food and the land, to witnessing food waste in restaurant kitchens, to experiencing food insecurity firsthand.

The details in the story are what make people care about WHAT you do and give it so much more meaning.

Your audience will not connect with a list of services.

They connect with why you care, what you’ve experienced, and why your work matters.

How are YOU getting people to know you, trust you, like you, and say YES to you? How many doors could a story like this open up for you?

10/12/2026

You know the impact your work has.

You know the stories.

You know the moments that make you think, this is exactly why we do this.

But does anyone else know?

Because the things that feel obvious to you can be the very things your audience needs to hear to trust you and make them want to work with you.

Your work might not be the only work of its kind.

But the way you do it, the people you’ve impacted, and the stories behind it are yours.

That’s what makes you the industry of one.

For me, that's getting on stages, educating, coaching, interviewing, setting up cameras, asking questions, digging for the real story, editing, re-editing, second guessing a cut, and then watching it 47 more times. 😂

But honestly, my favorite part has always been the interview.

I love sitting down with someone and asking the question that gets them to stop giving me the “business answer” and start telling me what they really care about.

Because usually, THAT’S where the good stuff is. That's where the ROI lives.

Those are the stories I'm looking for and trying to get other organizations to understand that's where the gold lies... where your magnetic story is hiding.

And after years of doing this, I’ve gotten pretty damn good at finding them. And my absolute favorite part is watching organizations grow when they start using my videos EVERYWHERE and for EVERYTHING.

So when you see a 60-second video from me, just know… there’s a lot more behind those 60 seconds than you see on screen.... including this one ⬆️

Feeds are overflowing, yet people are craving something real. 🎥

Before you press record again, pause and ask: what is driving this video? A trend, or your why?

Posting to keep up with the algorithm gets you seen for a moment. Posting from your mission gets you remembered. When your video shows the people behind your work, the heart that fuels your organization, and the everyday moments that reveal your impact, viewers stop and truly take it in.

Audiences sense intention instantly. Content with a purpose at its core invites people in, and that spark comes through the screen and shapes your results.

Start with your why. The rest will follow. ✨

I used to stand in front of a camera and ask people to trust me with the hardest parts of their lives.

As a TV news reporter, I learned something most businesses never figure out: nobody remembers what happened. They remember why it mattered. The 'why' is what made a stranger cry on camera. The 'why' is what made an audience care.

Then I left that career — the one I thought I'd have forever — for a job that ended up letting me go without warning.

So I built something of my own. And in Wisconsin, it worked. I built a business I was proud of.

Then I walked away from all of it to end a cycle of abuse I was operating in. I left everything I'd built to get free, not knowing how I'd survive... but trusting that I would.

I rebuilt my life and business in Sacramento. In a home that, as a kid, had once broken me.

I didn't expect healing to happen there. But it did.

Here's what I know based on all of this: your business can be copied. Your services, your pricing, your process — someone can replicate all of it. What they can't replicate is your story, and the people you've actually changed by telling it honestly.

That's the work I do now. Not just pointing a camera at people... helping them find the why underneath the what, so the people watching don't just see a service. They see a reason to believe.

All of it comes from the belief I had in myself. The belief in my ability to tell someone's story. The belief in making others feel something from that story. The belief to rebuild my business. The belief that storytelling only opens more doors for what's possible for you...
