“What if we’re awkward in front of the camera?”

I hear a version of this on almost every single call I have with couples, and I totally get it! Being in front of the camera feels ~*weird*~. Ryan and I will be the first to admit that when a camera gets turned towards us we forget everything that we know and awkwardly stand there smiling not knowing what to do with our arms lol

If you’re choosing to elope, you likely don’t love being the center of attention, so we completely understand how imagining a day where cameras are photographing you for hours feels very intimidating. We’re the same way!

Our entire approach to weddings is focused on the experience and making you feel comfortable so you can eventually forget the cameras are even there.

So if you’re camera shy don’t let that intimidate you while elopement planning. It’s one of the most common fears we hear and it’s also one of the easiest to put to rest once your day actually starts!

Aislinn and Steve’s day is a perfect example of what a relaxed, all day intimate wedding can look like!

When they started planning, they learned it was really important to share their wedding experience with their families and they wanted to have intentional time alone together. So they designed a day around both!

Their wedding day in the dark by getting ready separately at different Airbnbs. Just before sunrise, they met out on the cliffs for a first look and time together before the day really started.

They met their guests right at sunrise for their ceremony. The sun rose right over the water behind them and they had the cliffs to themselves. After, they shared a small celebration in the parking lot with their guests with local pastries and coffee.

Next, they took their friends on a hike to show them more of the park before heading to Sweet Pea's Cafe for a brunch reception.

They took a break for midday and we met back up with them a few hours before sunset. Rock climbing has been a staple of their relationship for years, so they wanted to include time to do that on their wedding day! And after, we brought them to one of our favorite locations in the park to watch the sunset.

These two truly had an all day experience, but at no point did it feel overwhelming or rushed. They were very intentional about each piece and made sure to leave room to relax throughout the day!

You’ve decided to elope… now what?

Choosing to elope is a huge step toward creating a wedding day that actually feels like you. And now that you’ve made that decision, you might be wondering… what’s next?

Here’s where we recommend starting:

1. Pick a general location. Mountains? Ocean cliffs? Desert canyons? Forest trails? Even if you’re not 100% sure yet, narrowing it down to a landscape that excites you is a great place to start.

2. Choose your ideal season or month. This impacts weather, permits, trail conditions, and overall vibes. Think about whether you want wildflowers in bloom, fall foliage, or snow surrounding you.

3. Start dreaming about the experience. Do you want to hike at sunrise? Say your vows privately? Include guests? Have a picnic or cut cake on a mountain? Imagine what would make the day feel meaningful and memorable.

4. Find your people. This is a BIG one. Your vendors will help bring your vision to life, so choose people who understand your vision or can help you find it. You don’t need a huge team, but here are a few vendors you might want to look for: Elopement photographer (hi, that’s us!), officiant (can also be us!), florist, hair and make-up artist, cakering/bakery.

5. Ask the right questions. Before booking anyone, here are a few helpful things to ask:
- Do you have experience with elopements (or our specific kind of elopement like hiking, sunrise, pets, etc)?
- How do you handle weather and backup plans?
- What’s your process like from start to finish?

Choose vendors who make you feel comfortable and understand your vision. Trust your gut. You don’t need every single detail figured out yet, you just need the start of a vision, and the right team to help shape it!

Choosing the right elopement location isn’t just about choosing a place with the best views.

You want a place that matches the kind of *experience* you’re envisioning, not just what it looks like. Some of the most scenic locations are also the busiest, so keep in mind what that could feel like while you’re tying to share your vows.

Here are some questions to ask yourself,

How important is privacy to us when we share our vows? [If you are planning to share private vows and have a ceremony somewhere else, what privacy level do you envision for both?]

If you’re eloping with guests: What kind of accessibility do we need for our guests? [Realistically how far can your guests walk and what kind of terrain would they be comfortable with?]

If you’re not eloping with guests: What kind of adventure do we want for our wedding day? [Are you open to hiking or do you imagine an easier journey to your ceremony site?]

What weather are we okay with experiencing? [Do you want a location that has backups available in case of bad weather or are you okay with embracing the elements?]

What kind of scenery do we want to be surrounded by? [Now dream big and imagine what your perfect elopement location would look like!]
