...just wanted to say a big thank you to the lovely people of Portageville.
I passed through PV on my bike ride from Winnipeg to Memphis, and eventually called it quits in Clarksdale MS. I kept the Bottomless cup and the Tshirt and now sporting them in Wongan Hills, Western Australia, on our Harvest festival. I hope the lovely ladies at the library, and the hard working amigos at the Chamber of Commerce are well, and rocking into Christmas.
All the best, and thanks again, Phil

During Main Street Madness, our Portageville branch was temporarily closed, but we received a heartwarming surprise visit from a world traveler from Australia. This adventurous gentleman, who was trekking across America, stopped by our library to back up his travel photos and was thrilled to stumble upon our charming town during the National Soybean Festival. We were happy to open our doors for him to use our computer facilities, and before he departed, he graciously expressed his gratitude with a heartfelt thank-you card. He even joined in on the festivities, attending the Bean Bash that evening, before continuing his journey the next day.

We had such a special visitor in Rushville today! πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

Phil, all the way from Australia, is on an incredible cycling journey from Canada to New Orleans β€” and he made a stop at Local Brew. 🌎✨

Hearing about his travels and the miles he’s pedaled was nothing short of inspiring. Stories like his remind us how big and beautiful the world is.

Safe travels, Phil! We’re cheering you on as you keep riding toward New Orleans. πŸ’›

I was told back in Canada the I might be in the company of Canadian Geese flying south, and sure enough there have been a few 'flying V's going overhead, Tom Petty would be proud. No 'Southern Accents' yet, and the Mississippi isn't shining like a National Guitar, but the 'Delta' is still a couple of weeks away at least; very little rain up here, so it's a bit green.
All going ok so far, 36 days riding, and just under 2,000km, and St Louis not too far away (the geese will show me the way).
It's funny the songs that get into your head, an stay all day, and given that Memphis is still my target, and specifically the Graceland Motel where I stayed in 2010, Paul Simon creeps in quite often (and Ian Hunter).
Anyway, some random photos, murals from jar lids, graveyards from towns gone, motels where if it's too good for bedbugs or a drug cartel shoot out, it's too good for me also.
Take care y'all

Just a ride update for anyone not connected to my Facebook profile, especially the people at Bike Dump in Winnipeg, and those at Easy Rider in Brainard, Minnesota.
Bike Dump; the bike is still going fine, but by the time I reached Brainard I had worn the back tire to the cloth in places, as there were a lot of gravel roads early on. Easy Rider; the new tires are great, and the other tweeks have helped a lot too, so thanks to all.
In general I have been following the Mississippi River, various trails, Great River Road, and now I am almost at the Illinois state line, and I will probably dump the camping gear soon to reduce the weight, and make a big push for St Louis.
Thanks to all, cheers, Phil

Hopefully start a bike ride tomorrow morning from the centre of Winnipeg, following the Red River south into America, then continue to follow the rivers south for 3 months (the Red, the Souix, Missouri and Mississippi) with a drinks break in Kentucky all being well. The full distance from here to New Orleans is about 4000km, but we will see.

The aim of this is to connect the ride I did in 2008 (Seattle coast to New York coast) at Fargo, North Dakota, with Clarkesdale in Mississippi, which was a stop on my ride across the south in 2010.

Big thanks to Fan and Sarah at the Bike Dump in Winnipeg, who put together a bike for me in advance. Bike Dump is a community venture in Winnipeg, run by volunteers, doing great things; I am endetted.

The bike was a real bargain price, then pannier bag and tools from the 'thrift shops', tent and sleeping bag were Walmart, and everything together was still under $200.

I packed my granddad's repair kit, which probably has bits for shodding cart horses in it.

Thanks to Nick Bain for the Leeds shirt, seems the only sensible shirt to wear, and in Leeds 'Tubthumping' style, "if I get knocked down, I get up again" ...unless it was a truck.

If things don't workout on the bike, I will follow the same route somehow, as it is part of the USA that I haven't seen on the 17 years of traveling and living here (Omaha, Kanasa, St Louis..)

'No pain no gain', and 'the only failure is not trying', should make it a worthwhile venture, whatever happens. Cheers, Phil.
