Let’s talk aerobic base. I started running two years ago. I went from being a sprinter to long distance. That’s been a hard transition. I ran every run hard. I thought you should be exhausted and dead at the end of each run because that means you worked hard, and that’s good right? Wrong.
Maturing in the world of running is realizing that you have to be smart in this sport. I had multiple training periods that led to a relatively quick PB 5k (for me of 22:45). But a 1/2 marathon that doesn’t quite follow what one should normally have if you have a 5k time of 22:45. I ran a 1/2 marathon in 2:12. I bonked. I totally felt myself die in the last 5k of my 1/2. As that training block ended, I took 7 days off and had some time to think about how I’ll prepare for my marathon in December. I wanted to be smarter, stay healthy, and become a stronger runner.
So back to my first sentence, aerobic base. I knew I had to let go of my ego, focus on myself and not all the running accounts I follow. So for this next training block I am focusing on building a big aerobic engine that can carry me in those later miles. In order to do that, I need to let my easy runs be truly easy, and my recovery runs be actually recovery runs. I’m pulling back on those harder sessions and focusing on 1 hard run, 1 long run, and the rest easy runs for 6 days a week.
I’m excited for this next phase of training, I think I’m going to learn a lot and improve. Come along for the ride and watch a mediocre runner become slightly less mediocre. Cheers, and God bless!
