If my goal was to stay independent into my 70’s & 80’s, these are 3 movement patterns I’d make sure I never stopped training!
Remember you don’t need to choose conventional deadlifts, putting a barbell on your back to squat or farmer carry long distances at heavy weight…YET.
But versions of these movements should be in your programming & if they are not we should talk about why.
Training for longevity doesn’t have to mean finding special “longevity exercises.”
Train the movement patterns life continues to ask you to do.
Add weight when you’re ready.
Keep challenging your capacity.
And give 75-year-old you as many options as possible.
The goal isn’t just to live longer. It’s to stay capable while you’re doing it.
Hinge
Picking something up off the ground. Picking up something heavy without needing someone else to do it for you.
Deadlifts are one way to train it. RDLs, kettlebell deadlifts, good mornings are others. The exercise can change. The pattern stays.
Squat
Sitting down. Standing up. Getting closer to the ground. Getting back up.
You can train that with a back squat, goblet squat, box squat or literally practicing sitting down and standing back up from a chair.
Again…the exercise isn’t the important part.
Maintaining the ability is.
Carry
Carrying something from point A to point B without needing help.
Farmer carries, suitcase carries, front rack carries, bear hug carries.
Pick things up. Carry them around.
Simple. VERY useful.
