The Harlequin duck (Histrionicus histrionicus) is a small, strikingly patterned sea duck known for its love of turbulent waters, inhabiting fast-moving mountain streams in summer and rocky coastlines in winter. Males are boldly colored with slate blue, white, and reddish-brown markings, while females are drab brown with white facial spots, resembling the patchwork costumes of Italian harlequin clowns, which inspired their name. They are diving ducks that feed on aquatic invertebrates and are adapted to cold, rough environments, often found near pounding surf and whitewater.
