Mount Rainier towers 14,410 feet above sea level and is the most glaciated peak in the contiguous United States. There aren't enough words to describe the experience when you first see this massive beauty peek between the trees as you are driving into the park! I was literally awestruck! This mountain is stunning on it's own and when you add the wildflowers that were EVERYWHERE, it was Paradise! Now I know why they call the area we were in Paradise lol.

We were driving down Mt Rainier after a long day of hiking. I wasn't planning on taking any sunset photos because I was just too tired. Well, the sun was setting and I noticed the sky had turned a beautiful color so I couldn't resist. I asked Todd to pull over and while I was setting up my tripod I notice this beam of light show up out of nowhere. It lasted just long enough for me to snap a few photos and it was gone. It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Turns out it is a relatively rare occurrence called a Sun Pillar. Sun Pillars appear as a shaft of light extending above the sun, most often in high altitude and at sunrise or sunset. The weather conditions need to be perfect for ice crystals to form and become suspended in the air reflecting the sun's rays off of them.

Marmots are large rodents that live primarily in alpine areas and are one of the more common animals you can spot on Mt. Rainier. This little guy would aggressively grab the flowers as he was devouring them. I really enjoyed watching these cuties! The purple flowers he was eating are called Dwarf Lupine and grow in elevations above 7,000 feet.

While Todd and Aaron were fishing the Yellowstone creeks/rivers, I decided to to keep myself busy by trying my hand at macro photography. I don't have a macro lens but did my best with what I have. The photo of the hornworm/caterpillar on the purple flowers was extremely difficult to photograph. It was so windy the flower it was crawling on was blowing everywhere which made it hard to focus on it...and I have to admit that red horn thing kinda scared me. I kept imagining it smacking me in the face.

Yellowstone was not on our Agenda this trip. Last minute hotel cancellations due to the fires in Oregon brought us here, but hey, you can never go wrong visiting Yellowstone! The smoke from all the wildfires followed us here but it was intermittent and didn't really bother us. This was our 4th time at the park and the most crowded we have ever seen it but we still managed to find solitude and see mostly what we wanted and have our usual great time.

The National Parks are special places on earth that I hold dearly to my heart. I get angry and upset when I see people disrespecting them by leaving garbage, getting too close to wildlife, going off trail, and so on. Imagine my surprise when I found out that while taking this photo, I was being a touron myself! Todd and Aaron noticed the sign just as I was finished photographing and continue to give me grief about it. In my defense, It looked like I was still on trail and the sign was not easy to see. I think it had just recently been placed there because where I was standing the path was already worn. SMH. Anyways, this photo is bittersweet to me. Probably my favorite sunset photo I have ever taken but I feel somewhat guilty sharing it...but I think I'm getting over it.
