Last night I finally got around to editing some landscapes I shot on a trip to Big Sur with back in February.
This is Heaven’s gate, and the phenomenon of the earth being in just the right position for the sun to shine through the arch happens only a few weeks per year. This is a trip we have wanted to take for years and it finally paid off with this shot.

Yesterday, I was feeling the need for an adventure. It had been a while since I had gone out with the objective of shooting some landscapes. It can be easy to forget the feeling of the rush of adrenaline you get as a photographer when your work pays off (and you get lucky enough with the weather) and you get that shot.
I invited my buddy Steve to come along, as we’ve taken many spontaneous photography trips together (Big Sur and the solar eclipse to name a couple), and to my delight, he wanted to come. We prepped our gear, and agreed to meet at 3am to head to San Francisco.

When my alarm went off at 2:15 am, the temptation to stay in my warm bed and blow the whole trip off was overwhelming. But I fought the urge, and got up and headed out. As we unloaded our gear at the Marin Headlands, the forecasted fog we had hoped to be covering the bridge for a great above-the-fog shot of the Golden Gate Bridge wasn’t there, so we instead hiked the mile or so down to the beach to catch the reflection of the sunrise and bridge on the water and waves as they came and went. As we arrived at the beach, there were still stars visible, and some clouds across the bay towards the east. These, we hoped, would work to our advantage. Sure enough, as the sun rise neared, it illuminated the could bank behind the bridge and lit the sky on fire. The great thing about shooting landscapes is that the weather conditions are constantly changing. Even the same location is a completely different experience one day from the next. I can’t wait to return to this spot again soon.

Over the years, from time to time, people have asked me if they could buy a print of a photo that I’ve posted. I’ve never had a good answer for that, or any place to send them. I never could decide what to charge, and never had the confidence to believe that anyone would want to buy a print of one of my photos. Today that changes. I’ve set up a website where I have posted some of the favorite landscapes I’ve captured in recent years, and where I’ll post my work from future adventures. Where do you want to travel? Where would you love to photograph if you could? Head to joncoyne.com or tap the link in my profile to see my work available for printing, and send me a message if you have any questions, comments, or ideas for a print of a special place that you would love to have hanging in your house. But hurry! EXCLUSIVE FRIENDS AND FAMILY PRICING lasts only through the rest of the month during this soft launch period! Prices will increase when I fully launch in January!
