Last Saturday December 17th, a large crowd of locals in New Paltz took part in the annual national Wreaths Across America campaign that places evergreen wreaths at the gravesites of veterans. The event took place at New Paltz Rural Cemetery on Plains Road which contains the Ulster County Veterans Cemetery. For Hudson Valley One.

The Village of New Paltz held it’s own Pride Celebration on 6/5/21 in Hasbrouck Park. There was no event held last year due to the pandemic. The Hudson Valley LGTBQ has sponsored a parade and festival every year since the organization opened in 2005, the year after former Mayor Jason West performed same s*x marriages in the Village. They didn’t sponsor this year, which resulted in more of a local turnout. The event became a powerful platform for young people in our midst to share their personal experience of being a member of the LGBTQ community. For Hudson Valley One.

Last week SUNY New Paltz student activist groups joined forces with local activists to create a Die-In. The Die-In was a symbolic mourning for the demise of living things affected by global climate change. Many participants dressed in black and held signs shaped like tombstones.This event was scheduled to coincide with a visit to the campus by Congressman Antonio Delgado.Organizers of the Die-In say the congressman supports business as usual while the world is imperiled by climate chaos threatening civilization. Several activists interrupting Delgado during his formal talk were escorted from the venue by Campus Police.
