I’m only a couple of years late sharing these… 2.5 years to be exact. I recently saw this sweet couple and their new baby boy and decided it was time to share.
I never shared this session because, honestly, I was a little nervous about the folks on social media being their crazy selves. So before we get to the pretty pictures, let me clear a few things up:
🔥 This was a pre-planned field burn. I did NOT light a field on fire for a photoshoot. This burn was happening with or without us.
🚒 The local fire department and fire truck were on site.
🔥 Neither the couple nor I were ever in the path of the fire. The fire was moving in the opposite direction from where we were shooting.
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way… let me tell you how this idea came about.
I had dreamed up this concept for a while, but I needed to find the right couple to pull it off. Then Jasper and his fiancé mentioned doing engagement photos, and I immediately knew they were the ones! Jasper is a member of the fire department, so it couldn’t have been a better fit. Then we waited.......several months if I remember correctly, until a local farmer needed to burn a field off to clear it and he agreed to let us do my crazy idea.
And let me tell you… this was one of those shoots where the idea in my head and the reality were just a little different.
I learned VERY quickly that fire moves a whole lot faster than I had anticipated. There was absolutely no time for carefully posing and adjusting every little detail. It was more like, “Okay, stand HERE… NOW MOVE… QUICK!” 😂
Looking back, there are definitely things I would do differently. If I were shooting this session today, I would go over several poses with the couple beforehand so we could move through them quickly without scrambling quite so much.
But honestly? That unpredictability is part of what makes these images so special to me.
Two people who trusted me with a crazy idea, a controlled burn, a fire truck, and about 30 seconds of “LET’S GET THE SHOT!” 😂
2.5 years later, I think they were worth finally sharing. ❤️🔥📸
