Today we remember Richard Brickhouse on what would have been his 88th birthday.
Born October 27, 1938, in Wilmington, North Carolina, Richard Fleming Brickhouse carved his name into NASCAR history with a victory that will forever be part of the sport’s legacy.
On September 14, 1969, Brickhouse won the inaugural Talladega 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, driving the No. 99 Dodge Charger Daytona. In a race marked by controversy and safety concerns that led many of NASCAR’s top stars to stay away, Brickhouse seized his opportunity, led 33 laps and drove to a historic victory over Jim Vandiver. He became the first driver to win a NASCAR race at Talladega, a distinction that would remain his alone.
Brickhouse competed in NASCAR’s top division across multiple seasons, recording one victory, four top-five finishes and 13 top-10 finishes. He also competed in the Daytona 500 in 1969 and 1970, finishing 12th and sixth, respectively. His remarkable speed even earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the fastest time on a closed circuit for many years.
But Richard’s story extended well beyond the racetrack.
He proudly served in the United States Army and was remembered by his family as a strong-willed man with an adventurous spirit who approached life with determination and purpose. Above all, he deeply loved his family, including his wife, Sara Lopez, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family remembered his enthusiasm for life and the lasting impact he made on those fortunate enough to know him.
In 2009, Brickhouse returned to Talladega to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his historic victory, a fitting tribute to the man who helped launch the legacy of one of NASCAR’s most iconic superspeedways.
Richard Brickhouse passed away on July 24, 2026, at the age of 87, at his home in Rocky Point, North Carolina. While he is no longer with us, his place in racing history remains secure.
Today, we celebrate his life, remember his accomplishments and honor the legacy of a driver whose name will forever be connected to the very first NASCAR victory at Talladega.
Happy heavenly birthday, Richard Brickhouse. Your place in NASCAR history will never be forgotten.
