Freya is my Heart Dog, my Best Girl, my little champion, the one who has already beat the odds… She is amazing, and I love her to the moon and beyond! 🌕 ❤️

We went on an RV road trip recently, and I’m still working on the blog post detailing our adventures in the Canine Cancer Diaries blog series, but what I’ll tell you now, is that she has impressed me at every turn…

We’ve worked really hard to manage things that are triggers for her anxiety/fear and reactivity over the years, and we chose to plan some experiences on our trip that had some unavoidable *potentially* triggering things that she might come across. Trevor and I were on top of it as much as humanly possible to have treats ready and were prepared to pivot as needed.

Freya was AMAZING!!!

I can’t wait for you to read more about our adventures soon! Keep an eye out on the newsletter this week for a link to the new blog. 💕 And if you aren’t already signed up, you can do so here: https://krystalhiseportraits.myflodesk.com/join-the-newsletter

How would you describe your dog? Would you call him regal, majestic, magnificent? How about chill, lazy, or quiet? Maybe silly, goofy, or crazy? There are hundreds of words you could choose from… What would you pick?

Allow me to introduce Tucker! 💕 🐕 Let’s see… words I would use to describe him would have to include: lovable, in-your-face-affectionate, gorgeous, joyful, happy, and playful!

He is the younger brother of Skippy, who has also been featured here before, and has a dog mom and dog dad who adore them completely! 💛

This painting was in the works for a long time because we wanted to wait until he mostly finished growing up before we got started!! That way his portrait would “match” the same age Skippy was when we did his! Both boys are fabulous, and any time we go up to Tennessee to visit, Freya is always excited to spend time with them! 🤗

This painting is in honor of all my cat moms and cat dads out there! I may talk about Heart Dogs all the time, but I can’t leave out the cats! 💗 🐈 We love them too! 🐾

Random funny of the day - My sister recently sent me a meme video that described “who we thought we were going to be growing up vs. who we actually are…” And being that both of us are in our 30s now… it’s surprisingly accurate, ironic, and hilarious! That meme went as follows:

“Who we thought we were going to be growing up: Disney princesses such as Cinderella!”

“Who we actually are now - Cinderella’s evil stepmom who just wants to lay in bed petting her cat”

Ok, ok, minus the evil stepmom part, but the wanting to lay in bed petting my animal part - SPOT ON! 🤣 🐾

Here's the direct link to what she sent me 😆: https://www.instagram.com/p/C5vludaqMj-/

An often heard phrase is “eyes are windows to the soul.” 👀 💗 I’d like to take that one step further and say that dogs are a window into learning how to be a better human. Ok, it might not be quite as short and catchy, but it still rings true for me! 😆

What has your dog taught you about how to live your life better and to be a better human? 💕

You may have heard me use the phrase Heart Dog with respect to my Freya girl, but have you heard the term Soul Dog? 💗 I believe they are two sides of the same coin - two terms that both mean a dog who has captured your heart and left an imprint on your soul in a way that you will remember forever.

My dear friend, Marika lost her Soul Dog, Kerouac a few years ago. Conversations with Marika about Kerouac are all the proof I need that dogs can be your soul mate - a different type than your husband or wife or life partner, but a soul mate all the same.

Cosmo is the handsome pup I bring with me to any art and craft fairs I attend. He’s quite the showstopper, and people always ask if he’s my dog. I smile and say no, he’s my incredible dog trainer’s dog. I like to showcase a dog with dark fur at art shows because facial expressions and fur detail of black (or other dark) dogs can be difficult for people to capture in photographs. I want people to know that if they have a dog with darker fur, we can absolutely create stunning artwork of them! 😍 🐶

If you have a black dog and want to take great photos of your pup at home, my number one piece of advice is to have him/her face the largest available light source (especially a large window if you’ve got one!), and take the photo in that direction! Give it a try and let me know what you think! 🤗 And when you’re ready to commission a Heart Dog Painted Portrait - I’m here for you 💗

While many of my paintings from reference photos are for memorial purposes, they certainly don’t have to be!!

This handsome boy is Quinn, and his awesome momma commissioned this painting as a surprise gift for her husband! 😍 🎁

When she reached out, she already knew exactly which photo she wanted to use as a reference instead of scheduling a photoshoot. It was a photograph taken in Cocoa Village several years ago, but it was exactly the facial expression she envisioned for her portrait. This is a great example of how, depending on your specific circumstances, while your dog might be happy and healthy and very much still with you, you don’t *have* to do a photoshoot in order to commission a painting. If you already have a favorite personal reference photo you’d like to use, let’s do it!! 🙌
